Just found this forum and wanted to introduce myself. I'm Sarah from CT, and just recently decided to explore my options for bariatric surgery. Currently can't decide between VSG and RNY. This site has been so helpful! I'm leaning towards RNY because I have diabetes and reflux and also need to lose over 100 lbs.

Hi Sarah and welcome! Also new to this forum and wish I could've found it sooner, the crowd here is great. I'm fresh out of the Hospital from my RNY, and starting the way on self improvement.

From what I read, you suffer from chronic reflux, and that's kind of a blessing in disguise, because it's one of the most common complications of both surgeries, so in the best case scenario, it will be cured after losing weight. Worst case, there are alternatives, so no reason to worry about that.

Now, about your diabetes, it really depends on the onset. If it's early, I'd be leaning towards RNY, and will offer the added benefit of being a metabolic surgery, drastically improving your prognosis. If you've had it for a while, while I'd still lean towards RNY, there's no definite answer on the subject, so it's something best decided by your Endocrinologist.

In any case, you're doing the right thing.

Cheers!

diabetes and reflux

@Briswife15

welcome to the neighborhood - always room for one more:)

glad you are already finding good info and support on board

many peep say that reflux is a bad/common side effect with the sleeve.

i've also heard that RNY/bypass might be more successful long term with

diabetes over the sleeve - keep reading the boards, U-tube, boards

buttttt - i've been extremely happy these 6+ years with my wonderful

sleeve!! (never had reflux issue) diabetes, wellll did rear its ugly head back.

Knowledge is Power!!

good luck with your decision

Kathy

And Sarah, hello to you and welcome to infinity and beyond. I am in central Ohio and planning RnY surgery. June probably, after being the Bariatric God/Grandmother ( I am 72). perpetual bridesmaid for many months, waving and wishing well as everybody powered on by me, my Surgical Wedding Day should be coming soon. Ask any questions you might have about this pathway and journey, if I don't have the answer somebody else on Bariatric Pal will.
This is a good place to be as you prepare for this life changing experience, we welcome, new friends, we truly learn about this and life, in general here. 😝

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
