so confused about calories!

Recommended Posts

How do I ask this? I have been trying to diet without luck...3 months of less than 1000 cal and 1 hour of hard labor a day without a loss. Doctor said I was starving, so I went up to 1800 cal for 6 months- nothing! All of my doctors are now routing for me to get a sleeve. So I am just researching the pre-op for a sleeve and one website said post-op is 2 weeks NO calories. ? HERE'S THE ? So those of you on the pre-op liquid diet, do they recommend how many calories or just how many bottles of the shakes?

Sounds like they got their wires crossed. Even if the pre-op diet is liquid only, there are still about 500-800 calories a day. My surgeon just specified liquids, then Clear Liquids, but not how many per day. shakes have about 120-280 calories, Protein Water (clear liq) are 80-90 calories on average. I haven't heard about anyone being allowed 0 calories on pre-op.

I haven't heard this either. My preop was Protein Shakes for 2 weeks and my postop was 4 weeks of Protein Drinks, SF Popcicles and broth. Even doing liquids Protein etc you have calories. If they had that much restrictions I would think noone would be able to succeed. Good Luck

My surgeon not nutritionist never mentioned how many calories to consume during pre-op diet. They set goals for Protein and overall liquid. They also set guidelines such as which protein drinks to have and not to mix any with cow’s milk.

So with those parameters one doesn’t consume many calories (as they use to) with the pre-op/post of diet. And the post op diet isn’t 0 calories...just very few.

My preop was Premier Protien shakes...5 a day. 800 calories.

My pre-op diet was eat healthy, and clear liquids the day before surgery. Post op I had 1 day of clear liquids, then a week of full liquids. During that week, I had two Protein Shakes per day at about 160 cals each, and occasionally some Soup.

My pre up was 1000-1200 calories at least 2 shakes a days, full liquids. 60+ Protein, 150 carbs MAX (I Kept mine under 75-100) I think maybe 30 grams of fat max. I barely hit 1000 calories.

WAter!

first 3-4 days were hard

0 calories? That limits it to basically Water. No, your body needs energy still. My 2 week pre op diet was 3 Protein Shakes, water, sugar free Jello and popsicles, caffeine free tea and crystal lite, and low sodium broth. It was difficult, but detoxing made it easy for my first week of surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
