How big is your stomach after VSG?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

Just curious as to how big your sleeved stomach is after surgery. I've been reading about some different sizes and what works best in the long run. I totally forgot to ask my surgeon the exact size. Nutritionist said to expect about 5-6 oz or a small banana. But that didn't translate to the sizing I had read about. I was just wondered if y'all knew what your stomach size was.

I'm in the pre-op liquid stage right now...and everything has gone very quickly for me. Surgery is 5/7. I'm so ready.

Thanks!

My doctor and nutritionist both told me it would be the size of a banana. The amount of food on my plate is equal to: 1T Protein, 1-2 t vegetable and 1-2 t fruit. I am full and don't always eat the fruit. I have a hard time getting all 60 oz of Fluid each day but I try.

Thanks for the visual! I can see that a little more clearly than anything. :)

It starts off feeling very small due to swelling and inflammation.

I'm 5 months out. I easily eat 4 ounces or so at a time. About a half a cup. Maybe a little more...particularly if the food is a slider like yogurt or oatmeal or Protein Bar.

My meals are typically about 200 calories. And I eat 6 of them a day. LOL:)

That's just the beginning post-op phase while your stomach is healing. I'm 16 days post op now and it takes me 30-40 minutes to finish a Greek yogurt, my hospital roommate said the same thing yesterday while we were both eating a yogurt. I'm on blended foods phase. My dietician said by next week I will be able to fit more a little faster and comfortably. So it varies from your post op timeline. I am still figuring out how to eat and drink properly, seems easy, not always. But last night I had 3 oz of chicken (over like an hour) green Beans (another 20?) and a tsp of mashed potato. Too much. They say average is 3-5 ounces when healed. I hope for 4

The doctors use a “bougie” as a guide for cutting and the true size of your sleeve depends on the size your doctor uses and the method they use. But here are some visual representations

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
