Let's Talk Dying By Your Own Hand!

Recommended Posts

Ok, I'm old, cheap, and broke. No way can I afford to pay to have my hair colored--especially when I would need touch-ups every 4-6 weeks! Eeek!

Do any of you color your own hair? If so, which brands of color do you like the best? Which look the most natural?

I have a significant amount of grey. I know grey is in, but my grey just looks kinda drab. So the question is, do I emphasize it's pop and bleach it lighter then do that grey toner thing? And really make it pop? Or do I try to cover it? I'm maybe 25-40% grey? Hard for me to be objective and estimate it. (I know I don't want to look like I just poured a bottle of jet black over my head and look like Roy Orbison...)

Ok shoot with your best stuff!

I am looking for a way to grow my goatee again. I shaved it off because it's now all white. I am allergic to the Just For Men beard/mustache gel so that isn't an option. I miss my goatee and if y'all have any ideas, I am all eyes.

I say embrace the gray -- its popular these days. After decades of highlights/color ($$$$), I let it grow out with a little assistance from my hairdresser-- or should I say gray out, LOL?

Do you know if grey toners need to have you bleach your hair first for them to "take"? Or can you just use a grey "rinse" after shampooing and it will brighten and tone the grey?

I thought this was going to be about euthanasia!

Anyways, I know what you mean, my hair was so dark brown most people thought it was black, I generally get it coloured chocolate with reds mixed in. But the grey its a dirty colour grey so I will probably cover it with a lighter colour when the coverage goes mostly grey. I like the stark white hair (though I know its not white its just a good tone of grey/silver) some people wear it well.

When you have gray hair and use a semi-permanent color (my HD used Redken Shades EQ), the grey colors differently and becomes like a highlight -- this was part of my transition to natural color.

Thanks girl! Do you like your transition? Are you gonna lighten and emphasize the grey with rinses?

What about youth in America?

Technically Tasmania is considered part of the Australian continent.

Not much with hair coloring. Tried it once and found it to be unnatural.

I've been dying my hair a reddish brownish color for several years now, because my natural color is a dull, mousy brown that I hate (one of my potential rewards for reaching a major goal is to get some sort of professional mermaid-style hair color, but I'm chickenshit and cheap so I may not go that route because it takes so much aftercare).

For the past few years, I've been using Feria 36 (deep burgundy brown):

Will be dying it again tonight, actually (my mom does it for me because I just end up making an uneven disaster of a mess if I try it myself). Every once in a while, my arm is drawn toward the more violet shades, but I haven't gotten up the nerve to go that far yet.

FLUFFY wants to tone, her feathers? Nice and Easy is good, your gray will pick up the new color in a slightly lighter shade, it will look like highlighting/sunlighting. Look on their box, they brag you'll look like natural but better. And if you want to someday commit totally my recommendation Swartzkopf, a little more pricey but to my and others I've talked to takes better than Garnier, Revlon L'Oreal or Regular Clariol. Hey, do you know what. that from German means?
Answer: Blackhead. Yeah old Stormin' Norman was a German Zit, funny what a liberal arts degree teaches you! 👮😆

I'm in the same 25%-40% grey range. I started turning grey young, and have been dying my hair since before I was 30. At this point I need to color my hair every 4 weeks. Going to the salon is expensive, so I alternate every other time dying my own. I've been using L'Oréal Paris Superior Preference Permanent Hair Color, and have been happy with it.

If you want brighter grays use a purple tinted conditioner. It will tone the to a bright white. I color my own hair, bleaching the roots and coloring it whatever color catches my eye that week/month currently its purple and pink.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
