Tiny red bumps on belly

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I am 4.5 days post-op, and tonight I noticed some tiny red bumps all over my belly and some on the sides of my belly. I swear they weren’t there this morning.

Could this be related to the surgery, anesthesia, meds, or iodine they prep you with? I did notice the bumps seem to be in almost the exact location the orange-y iodine stuff was. I sort of want to nip this in the bud right now with some Benadryl... is that ok to take 4 days post-op? Thanks for any info!

I had tiny, itchy red bumps post-op that were due to the surgical tape. I carefully removed it and replaced it with bandages, and that alleviated the itchiness.

I'd contact your surgical team to be safe.

It could also be related to the liquid they use to prep you before surgery. Some people have reactions to it. I didn't get itchy until about a week out.

Thanks everyone! My surgeons office said it could be due to the Tylenol/Codeine I was taking. They did not think it was related to the surgical tape or glue since the bumps are all over my belly. They told me to take Benadryl, which did not help with the bumps but sure did help me sleep. Right now they aren’t itchy, hoping it stays that way.

3 suggeastions for if it does start itching.
1 Domeboro soaks, active ingredient oatmeal. You can duplicate it, if you're cleared for bath, cool bath, what I usually did was tie up oatmeal in a dishtowel, and use it kind of gently patting it on me. Think you could duplicate it with barely warm shower and do,same thing.
2. My mama used cornstarch/ old fashioned laundry starch, the kind you usually had to cook to use. I had and sometimes still get allergic rashs.
3. Late MIL swore by baking soda baths or using it in damp compress.

And Angela's it can be adhesives and tape, I'm allergic to it also.

An ice pack is really helpful as well if the itching comes back. I think I would've torn my skin off from scratching if I didn't have the ice packs.

I had this after I had previous abdominal surgeries and it was due to the glue they used to seal my incisions. I now ask that they staple me instead of using glue

My reaction to glue was only right around the incisions -- small/tiny blisters.

Thanks everyone. Well, the bumps have gotten bigger, redder and now they itch. There is also a lot of redness around the incisions now. Surgeon’s office said to continue with Benadryl and also to get extra strength medical grade hydrocortisone cream. They want me to to that for a couple days. If that doesn’t help, the next step is steroids. Cold compresses seem to help a little as well. I think the fact that I have resisted scratching also helps. May also try some of the other suggestions above. Thanks!

Could be a staph infection. It happened to me and after 3 weeks I went to my primary doctor. The Benadryl calidryl hydrocortisone didn’t work at all. I was hurting badly

Thanks for the info BossBev. I was actually thinking of calling my PCP.
What did your primary do for you? Did they clear it up?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
