Liked the licked a pepperoni slice, I tried to chew a natural chicken nugget that was left over from family dinner without my dentures, Finally tossed it after I chomped it awhile, the taste was pretty nice. My dentures were soaking in Polident overnight and I didn't want to wash them off. Pathetic, aren't I?

I like watching Clusie as well!

Oh, and this preop diet is bullshit! I hate it, so much harder than I thought it would be. On a positive note I LOVE Iconic Protein Drinks and the Protein Water from sams!

So my pre-op diet is for 14 days, 1st 3 days only Protein drinks and Water. After the 3rd day, I can eat carrots, spinach, cucumbers, etc plus protein drinks or protein Soup if needed. I assume I can also have sugar free Jello although that was not in my plan. Today it's my 3rd day and I feel okay. Still trying to stay focused and stick to it because I know it will pay off. Just remember, before giving in to a craving, check in here for support. At least it has been working for me. It's tough but we are undoing years of bad habits so it is challenging but very possible.
PS I had an endoscopy. I did not feel a thing. Good luck.

I am apparently very poor at math! For some reason I thought you had a shorter pre-op diet than me. [emoji23]
I blame it on Protein Shake brain fog!

Im probably going to get slack for this. I have my surgery on 5/11 and have researched deeply on this preop liquid diet. I read this diet is suppose to make us go into Keto to shrink the liver. Technically to go into Keto, if you dont eat carbs and bad fats ( but healthy fats is ok) you will tap into your fat stores and shrink your liver quick. I.E, Eatting Cauliflower Mac is considered keto since its carb free...Its just Califlower with heavy cream, cheese, etc. All these ingredients is zero carbs, and very little sugar. I've read also depending where you are some are allowed to eat grilled fish with no salt seasoning and lemon, which fish is zero carbs. Other countries have different requirments like this one person on here lives in Australia and is required to do 30 days! Others like me have to do 14, and lucky few have to do 3 days. So my question is who's telling the truth?
Anyhow, I feel you. This liquid diet is crappy. Its not my favorite thing to do at all.

I didn’t know the liquid pre op diet had anything to do with Keto. I’ve been in ketosis since a few days after I started seeing the dietician but I still have to do a liquid diet for 7 days prior to surgery. I do think any preoperative diet is to help shrink the liver of fat but I also think the liquid diet helps prepare and empty the stomach for surgery. Doesn’t that make sense? It may also depend on how much weight they hope you can lose before anesthesia. I don’t know! It is confusing though. All the veterans always say follow YOUR surgeons plan. Good luck!

I’ve tried several times to reply to some of the recent posts but I can’t gather my thoughts and I keep editing my little paragraph over and over. This liquid diet has me in shambles [emoji30]

It only takes a few hours for the stomach to be empty for surgery, which is why most surgeries, including GI procedures, have one stop eating after midnight or some such time, sometimes they may restrict one to Clear Liquids for a few hours before that, but otherwise it is similar to what one needs to do for an EGD.

The shrinking the liver thing is something that is debated amongst the surgeons, as to how much improvement can actually be achieved with a week or two of dieting, but to the extent that it is therapeutic, it is the low carb/keto thing that has the beneficial effect; the liquid only diet that some programs impose is of questionable value in that regard as many programs don't impose any diet at all other than the standard day or night before thing. A couple surgeons I know specifically don't want their patients fasting for weeks ahead of time as they want them as strong and healthy as possible going into surgery - a lot of different philosophies and experiences out there that lead to these varying practices.

There may be other reasons for the different pre-op protocols (other than, hopefully, "that's the way we've always done it") so it's best to follow your surgeon't plan even if it isn't fully explained

Awesome! I’m dying at the licking of the pepperoni though! Lets see, I’m on day 6 now. You’re a lucky duck that you have so short a pre-op diet and I am jealous! I messed up on day four and had a tiny bit of shredded boiled chicken. Ugh! I thought that little bit would be ok since most people are doing a version of the Keto diet. WRONG! I got soooo nauseous the whole next day! I guess after even just 3 days of all Optifast and Jello solid “regular” food messed me up. But let me tell you, feeling like crap that whole next day sure made me not want to cheat EVER AGAIN!
But, it also freaked me out because how am I going to feel on day 15 when I have some cream Soup or pudding? Will everything normal make me feel gross? I was freaking out anyway because I’ve never had surgery and the anesthesia part is scary. Now I’m getting worried about all kinds of stuff! Eek!
Tomorrow is my endoscopy so I guess I’ll get a taste of anesthesia then.
How are you doing so far? What diet does your surgeon have you on?

I’m on a 7 day liquid only diet. I’m allowed 60g Protein, and I do get to eat pudding as part of my plan. Right now I’m doing okay physically, besides being tired. It’s all mental at this point, which is hard but manageable. 😊

today has been tough. And it’s only 11am. 😳

Day 4 and I feel good.. didn’t think I’ll be saying this but there’s nothing I care to eat. I’m fine as long as my stomach doesn’t have that burning hunger sting. Who would have thought. The complainer is having an ok day [emoji57]

Hope everyone else is staying strong and pushing through. Hope as the days go on it only gets better but I’m sure it’ll be lots of ups and downs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
