Almost quit on Day 1 of my pre-op liquid diet

It looks like everyone has very well covered the mental aspect of it and how important it is to start and stay committed. I know you can do this. It isn’t easy at first. I cried on day 10. Ugly cry. Sobbing. But I made it 14 days. You mentioned that you don’t like drinking Water. There are so many sugar free low cal/no cal drinks out there. Propel (several flavors), flavored Nestle water, Diet decaffeinated tea, diet lemonade, zero cal Vitamin water (my fav is called vitamin zero xxx), crystal light, etc. Honestly, if you drink 64oz of liquid a day outside of your shakes, there’s not much room for legit hunger pains. You will have mental hunger. My family didn’t eat around me for about the first week. We scheduled meal times that way, which seemed to help. This is a HUGE mental reset that will help you post op. It truly is mind over matter. I also told myself during the preop diet that for me personally I’ve gone through much more difficult things in my life than a liquid diet. You’ve got this!

Thanks for all the water substitute ideas deff going to look into that and find something I like enough to sip on all day and fill up on. The mental hunger is very real. I fill myself up with 20oz of water and a shake and I may be up to the top volume wise but in reality I’m still hungry, I’m hungry for food for the taste the flavor the texture the satiety it gives me. I just have to tell myself “you know you are not starving”. it also makes me feel awful to think how there are so many people in other countries who are truly starving and don’t even have these Protein Shakes they only eat one meal if they’re lucky (like Venezuela) and here I am whining so much [emoji30]

Don't give up hun. I'm on day 3 of a 10 day pre liquid diet (Surgery May 10th) and I understand its hard but we have gotten so close to give up now. I wish i could have veggies but I'm on all liquids so sf Jello and sf popsicles are my bestfriends right now. Keep up the good work you can do it!
I've been watching the fat doctor on youtube when I have free time so I won't think about food. Just try to stay busy and hydrated.[emoji4] [emoji173]

Thanks for sharing your story. I know we can push through. It's so much more than the hunger. It's the bad habits and the mind as well as the hunger. Yesterday was my day 2 and I found myself looking in the fridge 3-4 times trying to give myself excuses as to why one piece of cheese or one piece of white meat wouldn't jeopardize me. Then I thought, let me jump in on this group and try to retrain my mind on how to move forward and stay positive. For me, this year was been brutal. I stopped smoking and gained 30 lbs and my joint and back pain became unbearable. I was popping aleves all day, and always out of breath. My social outings became almost obsolete and all I did was stay home after work and watch tv. That is not living authentically. For me, this is not about beauty, it's about health and wanting to be able to do the basic things that people with my weight struggle with. I never thought I would be this way but here I am. Fat, unhappy and unhealthy. Don't get me wrong. I love myself but I dont love who I allowed myself to become. food became my friend and my comfort but it was also slowly killing me.

Sorry to write such a long post but I want to make sure we keep eachother accountable and strong. This is not a fight we have to go through alone. People don't understand the struggles but we do and we have to beat this. Let's stay focused, look at the reward of doing this pre-op diet and on how wonderful we will end up feeling in the long run. I am on day 3 and feeling so much better!!! Thank goodness.

Every time I sat down in a chair at a restaurant I wondered if it would break as I was at 360 pounds. I have no comorbidities, and with this WLS, I’m hoping to keep it that way! I want to be healthy and be a good example for my kids. I understand, girl! Don’t feel bad about looking in the fridge or the pantry. I did it too. One night I actually LICKED A PEPPERONI and tossed it in the trash. It was so silly and we all just laughed. Good talkin to ya. Hang in there!

What I found so interesting after a few days into the liquid diet was since I couldn’t spend time eating or preparing meals I had so much more time, energy, and motivation for other things. This has continued post-op and I am so thankful. I almost feel set free from the bonds of food. Everyday I had to tell myself “Food is for the purpose of providing nutrition for health and survival.” Society has placed food at the center of every occasion imaginable, but we’ve gotta remember it really just has one purpose - fuel our body to survive. It’s a very mentally challenging thing to have WLS. Keep chatting with folks on here. Keep following your instructions and look forward to great changes!

I’m one day before y’all!! That’s the closest I’ve found too! 😊

day 2 is going much better (so far) than day 1. I love the positive vibe in this group! Every time I rethink what I’m doing, I look at the list I made over the past 6 months that reminds me why I made this choice yo be healthier

I haven’t licked any pepperoni yet, but I did spend a good 45 seconds smelling my daughter’s Monterey Jack cheese when I cut it up for her lunch. 😂😂

Awesome! I’m dying at the licking of the pepperoni though! [emoji23] Lets see, I’m on day 6 now. You’re a lucky duck that you have so short a pre-op diet and I am jealous! I messed up on day four and had a tiny bit of shredded boiled chicken. Ugh! I thought that little bit would be ok since most people are doing a version of the Keto diet. WRONG! I got soooo nauseous the whole next day! I guess after even just 3 days of all Optifast and Jello solid “regular” food messed me up. But let me tell you, feeling like crap that whole next day sure made me not want to cheat EVER AGAIN!
But, it also freaked me out because how am I going to feel on day 15 when I have some cream Soup or pudding? Will everything normal make me feel gross? I was freaking out anyway because I’ve never had surgery and the anesthesia part is scary. Now I’m getting worried about all kinds of stuff! Eek!
Tomorrow is my endoscopy so I guess I’ll get a taste of anesthesia then.
How are you doing so far? What diet does your surgeon have you on?

So my pre-op diet is for 14 days, 1st 3 days only Protein Drinks and Water. After the 3rd day, I can eat carrots, spinach, cucumbers, etc plus Protein drinks or protein Soup if needed. I assume I can also have sugar free Jello although that was not in my plan. Today it's my 3rd day and I feel okay. Still trying to stay focused and stick to it because I know it will pay off. Just remember, before giving in to a craving, check in here for support. At least it has been working for me. It's tough but we are undoing years of bad habits so it is challenging but very possible.

PS I had an endoscopy. I did not feel a thing. Good luck.

I really enjoy reading all the post and the positive reinforcement. The story about the pepperoni was hilarious. I’d lick a few things myself but I threw everything out and all I have is Protein Shakes in the fridge. I even made sure to have zero cash on me so I couldn’t order anything from the restaurants. I’m close to asking a family member to lock me away with a case of Premier Protein [emoji28]

So it’s 9:00PM (at least here in New York City) and I’m due for my 5th and last Protein Shake since I drink them at 9am 12pm 3pm 6pm and 9pm to perfectly space them apart just long enough to not bite my arm off but when 9pm hit just now I was like blah why even bother drinking the shake, I’m not going to feel any different than I do now and it will just wake up my stomach and it’ll just leave me craving more food. Has anyone done this? Last night I did the same thing.

What I really want is a nice cold beer and some lays chips [emoji28]

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
