Hey Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has or is going through the same thing as me. I was bypassed on 4/23 and yet I'm still in pain. Mainly it's my lower abdomen (slightly above my belly button and down) it prevents me from doing more walking and I even walk up in the middle of the night, multiple times because of it. I do still have pain killers that I could take, but I just stick to regular Tylenol.

I hate that I'm over a week out and I still feel bad. Healing has sucked so far, but every day it gets better. Besides this. I feel like this awful cramping feeling will never go away! I'll be reaching out to my surgeon soon about it, but just wanted to see if anyone had the same thing and maybe what they did to help with the pain?

Thanks!

Anytime you're post-surgical and experiencing anything that seems out of the ordinary...you NEED to contact your surgeon as soon as possible.

There will be a nurse or a PA who can field your concerns and advise you whether you need to be seen or not.

Maybe it's nothing.

Maybe it's an abscess that will only get worse until it gets treated.

You need to contact them. A week out...you should not be having pain that wakes you up at night.

Sprinkles, I agree with CreekImp, we have an OP on Bariatric Pal, I think her name is Danielle, she was having, bad abdominal pain, getting wirse, running a fever. Nobody medical would pay attention, pushed her callscetc to one side, she turned out to have a very bad absess, story for her still isn't over. Gosh I feel so for the poor kid, they've drained it, packed it and it's still not over. Yours may turn out to be very minor, pray 🙏it is, but keep on being the squeaky wheel, they are the ones who get greased and also there is only 1 you, stick up for yourself. That's a lesson all the longtime posters will tell you I still have trouble with, bought into the " you don't really matter" bunch of crap everyone around told me. Now I'm old and creaky and cranky but, I am standing up and doing it, and it feels D***Good!😝👊

The doctor told me it was gas pain... idk how it could be gas pain nearly 9days after surgery. Sigh. I'm starting to feel a little depressed. I just want to feel as close to normal me as possible. I keep telling myself that the pain is temporary.

Sprinkles, I had intense gas pain post op days 7-11 that were out of this world. I have woken up in pain every single night since surgery. I’m 16 days out gastric bypass and cholecystectomy now. I feel that my pain is expected. I walk every day, and on those tough days I wasn’t walking much at all. For ME, increasing my walking helped my gas pain. Shoulder rubs helped as well. I completely understand your frustration. I’m not healing as fast as I wish I would be, and I don’t even have any comorbidities. Now my pain is just muscle soreness. You have to think about how while this was a laparoscopic procedure, there were still several instruments moving and pushing and pulling and pinching like crazy for hours. It’s a major operation. Some people love to say “oh i bounced back and didn’t take pain medications and I’m fine.” That’s not true for everyone. Reaching out to your doc is definitely good. But also being comfortable with the fact that your body needs time to heal is very important. Take the time. Walk and drink. You will feel better.

Thank you very much for sharing! It makes me feel really good to know I'm not alone. You're right! I just have to give my body time. It just stinks when the majority of people felt pretty decent soon after the procedure. You don't have any more gas pain? Do you still wake up in pain?

I had pretty bad abdominal pain for a few weeks. It was right about where you’re describing. It got better slowly. Glad to hear you’ve contacted your Dr though. Never bad to check.

I don’t have gas pain anymore, but I’m also a little farther out and I’ve increased my walking. Truly the ONLY thing that will get rid of gas pain is walking. It was a weird sensation for me at first, because never in my life had I had gas pain. But when I increased my walking, girl that pain was relieved. I had to walk quite a bit for several days in a row, but it’s gone now. I do still wake up every night in pain. I will admit it’s more of a aggravating discomfort. I’m not writhing in pain or crying. But I’m uncomfortable and hurting enough to where I have to take a little pain medicine to sleep the next few hours. For me, this is expected and ok. It has gotten better every day though. I’m glad I could help relieve you a little. I’ve also gotten some good advice and encouragement from people on here as well. I’m thankful for this community! Don’t be so hard on yourself. It gets better!

Oh and I slept in a recliner for nearly a month. Couldn’t lay flat bc of the pain. After that, improved rapidly.

Just an update! No now sharp lower abdomen pain, thank goodness. I still have discomfort. It feels like I have a tummy ache. Still not getting much sleep either because of the general discomfort. I'm about 85% myself! Which, i'm pretty happy about. I go back to work on the 14th. I hope I'm more myself.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
