Unexpected benefit of preop diet

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to share something I experienced and would love to know if this has happened to anyone else. For the last couple of years I have experienced ongoing severe lower back pain. I assumed it was due to my weight gain but it restricted my activity to the point that I rarely left the house. Going to the grocery store was excruciating....had to find places to sit down briefly while shopping due to the pain. Husband suggested using one of the motorized shopping carts but there is no way I would do that. Terrible pain when doing simple housework activity and had to sit on a stool while cooking.

It got so bad I consulted a spine specialist and had an MRI. It showed normal wear and tear. He suggested some steroid/long acting analgesic injections and I reluctantly agreed. Had the injections on each side and there was no change in the pain at all. He then prescribed a topical NSAID cream which had no effect whatsoever. I rarely left my house for the next couple of months other than my preop appointments.

Started the preop diet April 18 and when I got up on April 22 I noticed that my back was not hurting AT ALL. It has not hurt AT ALL since then. Surgeon had no explanation when I saw him last week for preop appt. and said he did not think my liver could be that enlarged to cause severe back pain.

It is still hard for me to process but I am so thankful!!

@MIZ60 you are going to many of the weight losers including me. My PCP and otrtho have told me You're 72, what do you really expect? So I told him about my imaginary person whom I have named IdaMae.
IdaMae goes to her doctor
She says "Doctor, I'm having a lot of pain in my right leg!"
Doctor: " IdaMae, you're 84 years old, what do you expect?"
IdaMae: " Doctot, my left, leg is also 84, it doesn't hurt"!
And 1 more quick IdaMae
IdaMae: "Didn't Doctor say I'd he on this medicine the rest of my life?"
Nurse: " Why yes, IdaMae,that is correct."
IdaMae: " Then why are there no refills?"

May You have enough rain to nourish your crops, enough sunshine to brighten your days, and peace enough to sustain you today and all your tomorrows😝👍

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
