Initial meeting with nutritionist?

Recommended Posts

I have my first out of four meetings with her May 7th; (so excited!) has anybody already had theirs?

What kind of information did you get? A meal plan? Weight plan? Anything planned? What did you talk about?

Just curious as to what could happen during mine because, I know I could just wait and see, haha but I love to be prepared! And like I said, just overs curious!

And if you've have more what happened at the other ones too?

Thanks! :)

I did my weight plan and goal setting with my doctor and PA, and talked about dietary stuff with my nutritionist.

Doc and PA set a calorie recommendation and Nutritionist listened to my ideas for my diet, made suggestions, and talked about Vitamins.

Lots of good ideas exchanged.

That doesn't sound bad! Do you have to start taking Vitamins this early? I just had my daughter 6 months ago and I'm still using prenatals, I won't if that's okay, hm...

It's not bad at all:) Most of these folks are really helpful and knowledgeable.

Mine was excellent to help customize goals to the diet I preferred.

Lots of great resources....support groups, menus, recipes, tips. Good stuff.

At my first visit, I got a bunch of paperwork on what I should avoid, what I should be eating and sample meals for the week. How often to chew, what to drink and how often. The types of Vitamins I’ll be able to tolorate after surgery (that was the first visit) she then asked me what are my downfalls and what I have been doing to avoid those downfalls. Exercise and often.. By my third visit she tested my eye measuring and see if I can spot different portions and what I should really be eating.

ive learned a lot

At my first we talked about what I ate and how I ate and my NUT gave me recommendations on how to change my bad eating habits & make better choices.

i will admit though, my NUT never set a calorie goal for me and never said I had to lose a certain amount of weight although I should always be losing some if I make better choices.

one thing that helped was using a food journal of some sort; whether it be hand written or an app like MyFitnessPal. It’s useful to start now even with the regular food you eat so you don’t have to sit and remember what you ate..you both can go through it & the NUT can then advise you where to make adjustments.

I work with many nutritionists/dietitians and i have seen many in during my weight loss and they are huge advocates for bariatric surgery. So most are on your side.

Good luck & keep us updated. Starting this process is very exciting

Mine talked with me a lot about what my food challenges were at the time (sweets, fast food, pop, etc.). She asked lots of questions about what I eat in terms of portions and things like that. We went over a lot of information about what will be expected post-surgery, then worked on a plan to help me get ready for that.

We set food goals each time---more about weaning me off of the bad stuff and starting to develop good habits. I journaled my food intake daily, and she would review that at each appointment, then we'd set goals. During that time before surgery, I broke my habits of pop drinking, increased my Water, almost completely eliminated fried foods, and drastically reduced the amount of sweets I ate. It really set me up for success!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
