Still want another kid...?

Recommended Posts

Hi Ladies!!

I'm 37, single mom with a 9 year old son. I want to one day get married, and have another baby before 40 years old BUTTTT hoping to have surgery in June. Should I wait til I've had another child OR move forward??

Hmm... That's tough. I know that by losing more weight you'll be able to conceive better, but by giving yourself a time limit of 3 years to get married and have a baby... that's kind of hard. Do you have a significant other already? What do they think? Would you be able to keep the weight off when you conceive? Otherwise, might be best to wait. Your decision though!

I had VSG two weeks ago and we will try for another when I weigh less. It is not two years out like many programs recommend, but we hope to start trying next December. My doc said it’s ok as long as it doesn’t happen in the first few months. By December I should be close to my goal weight, so time will tell.

Age: 37
Height: 5’6
BMI: 37
VSG: 4/16/18
GW: 160

But seriously, I don't have a significant other right now. If I did, I would seriously consider having another before the surgery.

Ahh, I see. That's such a tough decision! I say go through with the surgery, meet someone, and then start trying to conceive. At least if you get pregnant by 39-40 you'll be the best you possible!

I would definitely move forward! A main reason for me to have the surgery is so I can be a healthy mom and have healthy pregnancies. Everyone throughout the Kaiser process has said I have to wait 2 years, but the surgeon said that’s not true, WLS won’t negatively effect future pregnancies, or delay them. Pregnancy will effect my weight loss, so once I’ve met my WL goal, or lost enough weight to be happy, I can get pregnant any time. It’s more about taking advantage of the great weight loss you have early on, rather than being physically ready for pregnancy.

It’s also more likely I’ll have healthy pregnancies if I’m at a lower rate, so it just makes sense for me not to wait!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
