Gastritis and hiatal hernia

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

Had EGD scope completed and told I have gastritis, hiatal hernia, and a few stomach polyps. It's been close to a couple weeks and haven't heard anything further about it. Anyone have/had these issues and did it stop or delay your surgery?

Thanks in advance for your responses!

The hiatal hernia is usually no big deal, as they usually fix that when they do your surgery. Polyps likewise aren't usually a show stopper, they usually remove them during the EGD and send them out for biopsy to see if anything nasty is in there - the same as they do with a colonoscopy. The gastritis may be a concern that they want to investigate or treat before surgery, or possibly change the surgery type if they deem appropriate. After a couple of weeks, they should have gotten back to you if they want to do something else, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to call them on it.

All of these are EXTREMELY common conditions in significantly overweight people. They shouldn't cause any disruption of your surgery plans.

I had all three...no biggie. My polyps weren't very big, my gastritis was mild to moderate...and probably due to taking a lot of ibuprofen. My hernia was big...and I got if fixed when I had my sleeve.

They do usually take a little biopsy to check for H. Pylori when you have gastritis....and you might be waiting on that result. H. Pylori causes ulcers, and obviously you'd want to treat that before surgery.

Wouldn't hurt to call in a week or so to see what's next, but I'm guessing it's just a paperwork wait and you'll be hearing from them soon:) No worries!

I had the sleeve done back in 2014. I’ve had GERD for most of the time. I recently had an endoscopy and they found a hiatal hernia. Almost immediately upon finding out about my hernia, i was approved for revision surgery on May 8th to get the gastric bypass. Good luck!!

My surgeon said my hiatal hernia was "huge" and that she would talk more about it at my next appointment. I already knew I had a hernia and it was probably big but now I'm concerned on what else she saw.

They may ask that you consider bypass instead of the sleeve (if your desired surgery is sleeve). I keep going back and forth on sleeve vs. bypass. I have my EGD in about 2 weeks and that will probably dictate which surgery I go with.

MissPriss deal me in to your poker game, I qualify. Gastritis,no polyps, GERD, small ulcer named Hector and moderate hiatal hernia. And probably in June I will become a Kangaroo, a RnY inside joke, due to the fact we all have pouches. 72, BMI 47-49 depending,on the table you use, 5ft8in tall,👸 fair skin, hazel green eyes, red-gold(aka strawberry blonde) hair. Now you almost know as much as my future😷 surgical team will, only thing they will able to tell is whether the carpet matches the curtains. All I ask is that they put me to sleep before I can comment on how cold ❄the 🏥operating room is. I once blamed one of my surgeons for the temperature, told him he was trying to freeze the germs to death. Maybe it's to keep the surgeon's from working up a 😓 sweat? Nobody, ever gave me an answer I liked. Scared, oh heck no, I am looking forward to it, that's the start of my renovated, better life, I'll defeat the Ghrelin Monster at his own game, he won't run my life anymore. Been trying,to drown him in Protein Shakes but he keeps 🚣bobbing up to the surface. Die👎 dreaded appetite 👎Die!

I'm having bypass. I thought about the sleeve but my doctor says alot of people get revisions to the bypass because they don't lose at much.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
