Has anyone had to lose 5% body weight before the surgery? If the answer is yes, can you tell me how it was done and how long it took?:help:

My dr wanted me to lose 20 lbs before surgery, so I made up my own diet of Protein shaes for 2 meals per day and a SMALL lunch, usually grilled fish and a small veggie. It works as long as you exercise some. I took up walking each night, parking away from the stores to walk more and instead of sitting and watching tv, I sat and rode my stationary bike while watching. Hope this helps....Dave

My bmi is right at 60 - my dr. says I cannot afford to gain one pound - actually he wants me to lose at least 10 (5 1/2 weeks till surgery). If this doesn't motivate me - I don't know what will!!!

How long would you say "a while" is? I'm hoping to have my surgery by the second week of December. I wonder if i could do it by the then? I am really stressed by this!! My last few weight loss attempts yielded next to nothing.

My surgeon wants me to lose 20 lbs. by the time my "two weeks before surgery" appointment rolls around (11/13/2007). He instructed me to do this in September, and as the ever chronic procrastinator, I waited until this past Monday to start dieting. I don't have to tell you how stupid of a decision that was!

Oh, and did I fail to mention that I had gained an additional 10 lbs. since that initial meeting bringing the actual weight loss requirement to 30 lbs.?! Silly me.

I have been "cleansing" and "fasting" since Monday, only ingesting Clear liquids and herbal tea. As of this morning, I have dropped 10.5 lbs. Not too shabby, although the majority of the loss has been Water weight. It hasn't been a cakewalk, but I figure that it will help acclimate me to what is to come once I am banded.

My surgeon wants me to have a BMI that is less than 50 going into the surgery. He says that losing weight before the surgery will help shrink my liver, resulting in fewer complications and hopefully, a quicker recovery. As if this wasn't incentive enough, he also threatened that if I had failed to get my BMI under 50 by the two weeks before date, I will have to give myself a self-administered shot of blood thinners every day until the surgery in order to thwart the chance of blood clots and stroke.

This seems rather extreme to me since I am relatively muscular and do not have major health issues. Has anyone else heard of this or had to give themselves these shots?

I averaged almost a pound perday loss with the Protein shakes and 1 meal plan. The walking helped very much too. Walmart Protein Shakes twice daily made with skim milk and a very small meal with no breads, rice, Pasta, sodas. Try grilled chicken/fish and a single veggie, keeping the portion around 3oz for each and you will have no problem losing the 5%

I had my surgery this morning. I don't feel that bad. I was told to walk-walk-walk and sip 3 ounces of Water an hour.

Congrats on the banding. The walking really helps a lot. Glad to hear you are feeling ok. Now, let the band heal itself in place and get ready for the journey of a lifetime

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
