Cara R 0 Posted April 27, 2018 Does anyone out there have type 1 diabetes and had gastric bypass surgery. I am excited to be starting this process but would love some feedback from anyone who has done it. Thank you
FluffyChix 17,415 Posted April 27, 2018 Just make sure you work closely with your endocrinologist, surgeon, and RD and understand all the risks/benefits of the surgery. Have you post-op plan on board BEFORE you ever go into surgery.
shortmocha 39 Posted April 27, 2018 I'm interested to hear what responses you get. I'm on the road to gastric bypass as well and I have Type 1. My endo and I have discussed this. He's on board with my doing it, but says while there is a lot of documentation on Type 2 and bypass, not so much on Type 1. He says we'll have to monitor it closely. I have a continuous glucose monitor so I'm hoping this will help me stay on top of my levels and avoid lows. While RNY won't potentially get rid of Type 1 like Type 2, we are hopeful that the amount of insulin it takes to control my sugar will significantly decrease and that there will be positive results for my A1C. My main worry is having lows and how to treat them without dumping. 1 Cara R reacted to this
Cara R 0 Posted April 27, 2018 I feel exactly the same, my endo is on board but says I will need to be closely watched. I am concerned about the lows and how to treat them but I am excited about the thought of not taking so much insulin and losing some weight. I wear an insulin pump and have a dexcom that can be used to monitor sugars but I am still very nervous about what is to come
