Saxons 71 Posted May 10, 2018 I have learned to sip any Protein Shake REALLY slow. It wasn't a problem before surgery, but now it definitely is. I make my own shakes with added whey Protein and Chobani yoghurt, which is very high protein. Usually banana, berries, mango... Love mango! It's probably the fructose from the fruit irritating my tiny stomach. Bah. I love fruit.

I am not dehydrated as I drink Decaf coffee and plenty of propel. for example - I drink the same Premier Protein shakes every day. 1 out of 10 times I will get a fast heartbeat (120), feel tired. sometimes I'm so groggy I almost pass out. Nurse/PCP and surgeon all say dumping! the other 9 times I drink the shake, no issues. We're allowed high Protein Cereal soaked in milk on our plan. same problem. no problems with dry cereal. only wet. thick oatmeal w/protein powder and flax seed is fine. same mixture, but runny = problems. Soup? cant eat it. broth is ok, but any sort of creamy soup with Protein Powder (even low fat) = same problem I can eat sugar fine. I can tolerate carbs. like I can eat a small red potato. but mash it up with a little fairlife milk ? dumping! it was frustrating at first, and still is at times as it's not predictable. but I know it will pass, and I've never had any sort of bathroom problems related to it, so I just grin and bear it. and make a note of it. I have wondered if there is a slight blood sugar issue occurring, but haven't pursued it. i am still in the pre-diabetic range (low end) even though I'm at a normal BMI and have lost 60#. I can eat most types of ice creams okay, but this particular time I was treating myself to Blue Bell ice cream. BIG MISTAKE. It was way too sugary and rich. I didn't feel it right away, but a few hours later when I was grocery shopping, it kicked in. My fiancé had to do all the shopping as I was stuck in the restroom. It was very painful and lasted a few hours. Lesson learned lol but as long as you are not eating anything that is too heavy and sugary, I think you will be fine I've had the same issue with really rich ice cream. It happens immediately though. No bathroom issues just an absolute terrible feeling with nausea. Passes in about 30 mins. Only kiddie sizes for me now and I'm very cautious. 1 jennypenny1998 reacted to this
SleevedJuneBug 16 Posted May 14, 2018 Unfortunately I developed Dumping Syndrome after I had my gallbladder removed six years ago, it's horrible. Protein Shakes and anything fried hit me the hardest. It's been worse for me since gastric sleeve surgery. My surgeon told me it should get better with time, here's hoping.
Saxons 71 Posted May 14, 2018 I can't really pinpoint mine either. Yesterday at Mother's Day, I ordered a beautiful ribeye fillet which was very lean, no visible fat. No sauce, no dressings. salad on the side, no carbs. All I had was 3 small well chewed bites of my meat and that horrible sweaty, rapid heartbeat feeling washed over me, along with nausea and diarrhoea. I just couldn't tolerate the Protein. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to what will bring it on. Sometimes I think its lactose, maybe fructose, then carbs and now protein! It's very frustrating and a little depressing, especially when you are with company, and who don't know about your surgery. I am about 3 and 1/2 months post VSG and 44 pounds down. Is this going to get any better? Sometimes I think it's getting worse! 1 jennypenny1998 reacted to this

Be aware that at many places they dip steaks in butter after cooking, so there isn’t visible fat, but there is a lot of fat on it. Typically fats and sugars are the culprits.
