Got a date! CPAP is making me pass out??

Recommended Posts

Hi! I finally got a tentative date for the surgery Dec 13th as long as everything falls into place before then. I had to start wearing the CPAP at night but it doesn't seem to be working. I feel like I can't breath & then I get to a point when I think I'm going to pass out. After I get a headache I take the machine off and go to sleep without it. Anybody have any advice for me? I've only tried for two nights, but I have to wear this thing for 2 weeks before the surgery at least....HELP!:faint:

Don't give up on CPAP if it's only been 2 nights. It can take several weeks to get used to. If you're feeling like you're not getting enough air, your pressure may not be high enough and you should check with your doctor about increasing pressure a little bit. Also, make sure you've got the right mask for your face. If you hate your mask, you have the wrong mask. There are too many options available to be stuck with a mask that's not working for you.

Try wearing your CPAP for a bit while reading or watching tv, it can help with desensitization.

Good luck!!

Anyalee, Congratulations on your surgery date, that's my birthday!

I also am on the CPAP. My doctor prescribed ambien to help me adjust to sleeping with the mask. Ten minutes after taking the ambien I don't even know I have the mask on my face! GOOD stuff! Maybe your doctor can give you a prescription just to help you adjust to the CPAP.

The medical supply company and technicians are supposed to be available to help you at all times.....give them a call. And do try other masks or nasal pillows....they make all the difference in the world.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
