Any fellow nurses(or any profession honestly) can help me out with this one... I currently work in home care, how long did you all take out of work? Ive had my gallbladder removed but due to other complications (pulmonary embolism) I was out of work for 1 month but honestly felt as though I could return to work the following week.... I know each individual is different but all input is greatly appreciated... TIA!

I think it depends on what your job entails and how well you handle pain. I had surgery on a Thursday and was back to work (remote) on Monday and back to the office (and train commute) the following monday (10 days). I think most people are feeling back to 90% or so in a week or two. Being a nurse though I would think that potential for having to lift people or do other strenuous things might mean you need to stay out longer to avoid the increased risk of a hernia.

I’m a hairstylist- on my feet all day- I took off two weeks. I was tired when I went back but felt fine other than that.

I deliver newspapers in my car 2.5hrs a night so i only took 2 weeks off. I go back this Thursday. Really depends on the line of work you do.

The lifting would be the problem, and as a homecare nurse myself, you don't normally have help, and many times I didn't have the needed Hoyer lift. If you're days, you have more to do physically, but if you work nights like I did, I'm afraid the stress from the surgery might tire you and perhaps put you in danger of falling asleep on the job. Just my 2 cents.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
