Russel Wilder was on the ground floor and actually NAMED the ketogenic diet...the ketogenic diet....at mayo clinic back in the early 1920's when they were using it to treat epilepsy.

And yet...Mayo doesn't even leave epileptic kids on the diet for over two years today....because of enduring concerns about cardiovascular side effects.

Not to say Mayo is the Know-all End-all of medical research. But they have a hell of a reputation.

Fluff you are correct that Atkin's shitty cardiovascular problems were strongly influenced by his illness.

But his diet sure as hell didn't help him. He still had heart attacks and couldn't breath....and it very well might have made his condition worse. We don't know.

Looking in his arteries in an autopsy could have provided information about whether it did or not......but his family didn't allow that....so we'll never know.

I could list other sources for the fail of fat causing heart disease, this is just the first one that came up. But there are MANY more!

These are all medical physicians who've authored countless papers and studies in peer reviewed journals--respected physicians who all have helped prove that ketogenic diets ARE beneficial when done correctly. The fat/cholesterol hypothesis of heart disease was disproved not too long ago.

Sorry. This line has a typo and should read:

"The DIETARY fat/cholesterol hypothesis of heart disease was disproved not too long ago."

"shi*ty diet" is YOUR opinion, NOT backed up with facts. Sorry. But TRUE! You're entitled to your own belief and view. But the debate over this is being fought by scientists in labs and in peer reviewed journals.

A low carb diet it NOT a shi*ty diet. Is it perfect for everyone? Nope. Not even. But does it help ameliorate certain disease progression? Yes it does.

Thank you for debunking the myths surrounding Dr. Atkins, @Creekimp13 and @FluffyChix. Moderation in eating is still very important. Atkins only caught on to the importance of enough Protein in your diet. There is also science to show that diets low in sugar are actually much better for you. It doesn't mean consuming vast amounts of unhealthy foods. Furthermore, I don't know where they came up with the grapefruit malarky. There is so much junk science in the diet industry that it is disgusting.

Diet will be controversial until the end of time. We all have our prejudices. I'm so far up the mayo Clinic Diet's butt...I can take it's temperature. LOL. We all have our favorites.

I know you're a Keto Disciple, Fluff, and I'm not trying to change you. If it works for you, awesome.

To each, their own.

Hate to add to the anthropology rant. But great apes are not our ancestors. We share a common ancestor that lived 5 to 11 million years ago.

If we're being absolutely technical....since humans ARE great apes...indeed, our ancestors are great apes as well. I could have technically said Hominidea, our taxonomic family of great apes (which includes humans and the other great apes and our combined ancestors)...but I wanted to keep things simple for the sake of conversation.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
