Creekimp13 5,840 Posted April 24, 2018 Atkins died on April 17, 2003, at the age of 72. Nine days prior to his death, Atkins fell and hit his head on an icy New York pavement. At New York's Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was admitted on April 8, he underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain but went into a coma and died from complications. He spent nine days in intensive care before dying on April 17, 2003 A medical report issued by the New York medical examiner's office a year after his death showed that Atkins had a history of heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension. https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB107637899384525268 His widow refused to allow an autopsy. 1 Nblorenz1 reacted to this
Creekimp13 5,840 Posted April 24, 2018 (edited) So...why did the medical examiner say that Atkin's health was pure ****... and his wife insisted his health was great? Could it be because she stood to lose millions on ketogenic diet books if it was proven he died of complications from a horribly clogged unhealthy cardiovascular system? Must have been some reason she refused the autopsy.... makes you wonder. Cause, you know, if it had been my life's work to show how good a radical new eating style was for you....I'd love to prove it with a clean autopsy and silence my critics. Guess Mrs. Atkins didn't want to take that risk. Edited April 24, 2018 by Creekimp13
FluffyChix 17,415 Posted April 24, 2018 (edited) https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/death-of-a-diet-doctor/ BTW, at no time did Dr. Atkins advocate an "all you can eat Protein gluttony" style of diet. His diets advocated only EVER for: PROTEIN ADEQUATE Stop eating the moment you feel a cessation in the drive toward hunger--NOT until full. But we are avaricious greedy people. And we take things to extremes. If someone says, "Have a little," we all take a lot. And it's all or nothing black or white. So we are the ones who bastardized his recommendations and made it a protein gorge, fat gorge diet. He had heart disease and a heart attack in 2006 due to endocarditis. I remember when it happened. He also weighed 195lbs the day he slipped on ice, hit his head, suffered a brain bleed and lapsed into coma. He gained 60lbs of Fluid in the hospital. I've seen this happen all the time to patients. All the time. To whip this up and spread falsehoods about a very real nutritional pioneer is really beyond the pale. Creekimp13 5,840 Posted April 24, 2018 (edited) He didn't die of heart attack, he died of blood clot on his brain and surgical complications that might have been complicated by his circulatory issues. His cause of death was events resulting from blunt force trauma of hitting his head. The report from the New York Medical Examiner's office was factual. He did have a history of hypertension, heart attack and congestive heart failure. The report was made public illegally. But it's still factual information from the medical examiner taken from his medical records. Dude had clogged pipes and a bad heart....and his wife wanted to keep this quiet. I think that's incredibly dishonest. The family's claim that he gained 60 pounds of Water weight in 9 days is also bogus...unless he was in renal failure, which would support the hypothesis of cardiovascular failure. And still.... 60 pounds??? Edited April 24, 2018 by Creekimp13
FluffyChix 17,415 Posted April 24, 2018 I didn't say he died of a heart attack. I said he had a heart attack that damaged his heart. The attack was caused by endocarditis. He died from slipping on ice and had a blood clot. People in comas often suffer edema build up. Their skin weeps. I've seen it and dealt with patients with this problem. It was NOT unusual for them to gain more than >50lbs. No, she didn't want unscrupulous people attacking his life work. There are so many supportive research and so many doctors who continue this work. You know nothing about what you are accusing. You do not have the facts. Dr. Stephen Finney Dr. Jeff Volek Dr. Mike Eades Dr. Eric Westman Dr. Tim Noakes Dr. Dominic D'Agostino Dr. Richard Feinman Dr. William Davis Dr. Perlmutter https://www.mensjournal.com/food-drink/truth-behind-worlds-most-cutting-edge-fat-burning-performance-meal-plan-keto/ http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/2017/03/31/bjsports-2016-097285 I could list other sources for the fail of fat causing heart disease, this is just the first one that came up. But there are MANY more! These are all medical physicians who've authored countless papers and studies in peer reviewed journals--respected physicians who all have helped prove that ketogenic diets ARE beneficial when done correctly. The fat/cholesterol hypothesis of heart disease was disproved not too long ago.
Healthy_life2 8,324 Posted April 24, 2018 I'm cranky pant today. Three year old and no sleep...lol I'm not shocked that his family wanted to keep this quiet. It's the American way. All about profit. What's healthy today may change next week. Example - My dietician was all about the benefits of coconut oil to cook with. Now she says it's proven unhealthy and change over to avocado oil. I Remember when the big news was red M&M's cause cancer..lol I was doing the Atkins diet diet back in the day when it was popular. Oh my god, Eating hamburger patties with salsa, Hard boiled eggs and only green veggies until I was over stuffed. I did lose weight..But I could not sustain the diet. My soap box....The media and advertisement pumps us full of we are not good enough so buy this product. Marketing campaigns are prue manipulation. There are so many dishonest diets, pills and exercise equipment that promise rapid weight loss? People are willing to try anything. I hate to admit I tried lipozene. What a fricken scam. 1 1 Creekimp13 and ProudGrammy reacted to this
Creekimp13 5,840 Posted April 24, 2018 (edited) All we can do is pay our money, take our chances, and trust the sources that seem most reputable to us. Our ancestors, the great apes, are not meat eaters. They're fruit, plant fat, and vegetation eaters. Once in a while...they eat eggs, insects, an occasional meat meal (less than 3% of their diet) But mostly, they eat fruit, nuts, seeds, and tons of vegetation. And they get a ton of exercise and sleep. (And of course, FIRE and cooking marked a huge change in nutrition and gut lengths as early hominids needed less large intestine and more small intestine to get the most nutrition out of pre-broken down foods) Sorry about the anthropology rant. LOL. But I guess it is the rant board. Interestingly, the people on the planet who live the longest....eat the Mediterranean diet...which is nutritionally similar.....lots of plant fats, fruits and veggies, legumes, lower Protein. They also get more exercise and sleep than the statistical norm. Diet will be controversial until the end of time. We all have our prejudices. I'm so far up the mayo Clinic Diet's butt...I can take it's temperature. LOL. We all have our favorites. I know you're a Keto Disciple, Fluff, and I'm not trying to change you. If it works for you, awesome. To each, their own. Edited April 24, 2018 by Creekimp13 2 ProudGrammy and Healthy_life2 reacted to this

Creekimp13 5,840 Posted April 24, 2018 (edited) I think we need a thread for all the bizarre diet/exercise products we've ever tried. I have a few embarrassing ones in my history, too. I think most of us do. Though, I never did buy a shake-weight! LOLOLOL Edited April 24, 2018 by Creekimp13 1 ProudGrammy reacted to this

If it works for you, awesome. To each, their own. The problem ISN'T different strokes for different folks. I highly endorse that premise -- there are many paths to a healthy diet. And I could give a flip about what diet you choose to follow. Live and let live. More power to you. I will follow my own path. The problem arises when you post outrageous headlines hoping to get a rise out of people. You generally succeed. By perpetuating a nasty, unfounded rumor, you've maligned someone who had a very important contribution to nutrition and healthy eating and I didn't feel like giving it a pass without a rebuttal with the ACTUAL facts. FluffyChix 17,415 Posted April 24, 2018 and cardiomyopathy which started the ball rolling. It was caused by an infection over a decade before his death. Here's one for you. I had CLEAN arteries and normal heart and pretty perfect labs. Despite PCOS, I had managed to keep my pre-diabetes at the PRE level for over 10 years. Developed breast cancer. Had massive doses of chemo and left side radiation that gave a big dose to my breast bone. 5 years later I'm diagnosed with mild atherosclerotic plaques. Left atrial enlargement. Fluid around my heart. And a fibrous growth on my pericardium. So when I die are you gonna say that damned low carb Atkins diet she followed caused her heart problems? Or will you be more accurate and give the full HISTORICAL facts that in greater than 85% of women with left breast neoplasms who undergo chemotherapy and have left side chest radiation with mediastinal exposure suffer from CHF and CVD? Cuz it's the same analogy. The guy got a virus. His heart enlarged and was never the same after that. Our very healthy, thin, 40 year old friend got the same virus. He survived 9 years before he died waiting for a new heart. BTW, his BP was crazy bad too after his heart enlarged. He was btw, a vegetarian. John died less than 50 years old from heart failure. At the time of his death, he had plaques up the wazoo. But the reason for his CHF was cardiomyopathy, cardiomegaly brought about by viral infection. 1 BigViffer reacted to this
