Waking up after sugery

Recommended Posts

I had ds surgery on 3/16/18. It took me about 2 hours to come out of anesthesia. I was nauseous and groggy but alert. I was asking the nurse questions and asked my mom what time it was lol My surgeon came to see me and we briefly talked about where he was going on vacation that evening, along with how my surgery went. I was groggy for a few hours but I the nausea from the anesthesia is what did me in. I couldn't move. I threw up bile and black stuff (I'm assuming dried blood). The nausea lasted for a good 12-14 hours and then I was finally able to sleep. Once that wore off, I was fine.

When I woke up in recovery, the nurse informed me that I had the surgery, but I didn’t believe her. It was my first experience with anesthesia. I was blown away that I actually had the surgery. The last thing I remembered was the anesthesiologist coming by to say hello. Next thing I know it is 2.5 hours later, but to me it felt like only five minutes had passed lol.

When I first woke up after surgery, I felt groggy and I had a little shortness of breath. That all resolved itself within 30 minutes. After that, I just had discomfort. No real bad pain since they had me on good pain meds.

It was a strange feeling, but a very good one to not remember anything about the surgery.

I was a bit more uncomfortable the next day, after the good hospital pain meds wore off. They sent me home with Tylenol/Codeine for pain, which was not as effective as whatever they gave me in the hospital. But even that discomfort did not last long. I am three days post-op and feel pretty good except for the CO2 gas and a little cramping/seizing.

I had VSG 2 days ago. I don't remember from falling asleep in the OR to waking in my private room 6 hours later. I do remember the nurse telling me it's ok to sleep if my body needs it. 2 hours later I was up going pee and walking. Keep walking and figure out how much Water to drink now. You will be home in no time.

It will all be worth it. Don't give up!

I woke up in the recovery room around 11am and was awake the rest of the day. I asked for ice, but was only given mouth swabs. Wanted to use the bathroom, but the nurse brought me a bed pan. I felt a little foggy, but fine. I didn't even get pain meds till I got to my room, but I didn't need them. And I transferred myself from one bed to another when I got to my room.

I was shocked how great my experience was.

I am scheduled for surgery on May 2nd... a lot of worries are running through my mind, and one of them is what waking up with be like

How was it for you?

Thanks!

I woke up in absolute terror. I tried to escape the bed. But incision pain and nurses held me down through a couple of attempts. I was barely conscious and could not even see, I just knew I was on a bed and I was trying to sit up to walk away. It subsided. I then watched the same thing happen to someone put beside me int he recovery room. I discussed it with a nurse and was told that some patients can laugh, or have a fight or flight reaction. I definitely lad the latter.

I always seem to “come to” mentally later than physically after surgeries. Like I feel like I wake up in the middle of a conversation, already alert and sitting up and mid sentence. So clearly I’ve already been awake!

Case in point once when I had wrist surgery the doc came in and gave me the full report of how it went (there were some issues).... never remembered having the conversation. After my plastics I literally first became aware of things while sitting up and mid sentence with DH and my surgeon!

Makes me wonder what I’ve unknowingly said!

I’m the exact same way. My husband told me I kept asking the same question over and over. The dr just laughed a little assured my husband everything went perfectly. To this day - I remember nothing. Lol

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
