Any advice for major bypass complications

Recommended Posts

I'm over a year post op from bypass and still have a problem keeping food and drink down. I was on tpn for eight months and now am on a j peg feeding tube. I have had complications every step of the way. I had a lap band in 2005 and removed in 2016 due to slipped and caused severe ulceration so. Gastric bypass done in January 2017 in hospital for ten day due to complications and infection. Went back in hospital in March for over three weeks with mersa. Back in hospital in June for ten days, had pic line put in and tpn started. Back in hospital in August for another ten days with a revision of the entire bypass again due to severe ulcers. Had gall bladder out in October. February back in hospital for over five weeks with pic line infection. Removed pic line and put in j peg feeding tube. Still have severe nausea and pain. Has anyone else been thru anything like this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm replying to this not because I can help (unfortunately) but to show you that your post is here. I hit "follow" when I read it, so I was able to find it that way. Maybe if I write something it will "bump" it back up to the top of the list where others can see it.

I have heard of these cases, but I think they are actually pretty rare.

I do work in a hospital and could tell you some similar stories where patients had one thing after the other happen post operatively, but it’s not exclusive to gastric bypass. There are risks to any invasive procedure.

I am so sorry you have been through this and I hope you are able to heal and be on the road to good health soon. Hopefully your complications will resolve and you will be done with hospital stays soon, I know it can be depressing and discouraging to be in the hospital so much.

Gall bladders commonly do go bad after bypass due to rapid weight loss. Picc line infections are unfortunately too common as the line requires meticulous maintenance practices to remain infection free. The high dextrose content of TPN increases risk of infection there as well.

We are here to support you.

I am so very sorry you are going through this. I have had a number of complications stemming from my 10/2017 sleeve operation requiring two additional surgeries (one converting me to bypass) and multiple hospital stays. I just got out of the hospital a week ago today actually. My experience has not been nearly as long or difficult as yours and it has been a huge struggle for me. I cannot imagine what you are going through but I pray that the complications end and you get healthy so you can stop suffering and enjoy life. Please keep faith. It will get better.

So sorry for all the pain and suffering you are going thru. I had gastric bypass 12/17 and was back in the hospital with a leak three weeks later and had emergency surgery. I was in the hospital for 39 days. I had an infection in the PIC line, and developed pneumonia. The TPN made me terribly nauseated and constant diarrhea. Once it was out of my system I was much better. The j peg was left in until about 5 weeks a go. It was so uncomfortable and made it hard to get around. But, once it was out it was immediate relief. Hopefully your nausea will go away once the meds are out of your system and you can rest better.

Im feeling much better now, but still get nauseous once or twice a week. Also, I’m not able to follow the proper diet and eat mostly mashed potatoes and chicken dumplings. I never feel nauseated with them. Hang in there, and know we are supporting you.

PS..not comparing my story to yours. It’s not been nearly as long. Hoping you feel better soon.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
