Age 60 is the new 40?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Woohoo! I have finished my extensive 'checklist' of tests and exams and classes required by my program, and now waiting on insurance approval and a surgery date for the gastric sleeve. I am hoping for late May 2018 surgery date. I'm 60 - so for me it's now or never. I have stayed motivated and obtained excellent education by listening to Reeger Cortell's podcasts (highly recommend) as well as reading peer-reviewed journal articles, going onto sites like this one, and others on Instagram. I love the before/after pictures - truly some amazing transformations! I'm nervous but ready for showtime! My highest weight is 272 pounds (5'7" height, wearing size 22/3X clothes. My goal is to do the best I can, treat the sleeve well, not overeat, stick to the rules, healthy diet choices, Protein, hydration, Vitamins, exercise and all that is required for maximum success - so that I am out of plus size clothes, exercising regularly (miracle right there). If weight is a goal, then ideally I'd like to get to at least 170. Would love to have some May or June buddies!

xoxo

Well, I can't be a May-June Buddy since I was sleeved in February, but otherwise, I'm here for you! I'll be 59 in July and our heights/weights and goals are very similar. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything I can do to help! Best wishes on your surgery and transformation! Now, I'm off to the gym!

60 is the new 40? Isn't that like Menopause is like,a Monthly Cycle? Some similarities but not quite the same!😭

60 is only the new 40 if you plan to retire at 85. LOL.

People are living longer, but weight loss is harder after menopause. Be consistent and work hard... but be realistic, too. Don't feel like you're doing something wrong if the younger people lose a little faster...just stay the course:)

Best wishes on your upcoming procedure!

I am 58, sleeved in January. Hit a milestone this week as I am out of women’s size clothes. Weight loss is slow but steady— my BMI was at 36 at time of surgery. It’s become apparent that I will need some work done as my neck is showing that droopy crepe that annoys me. I don’t mind being mature, I just prefer not to look like a worn out shoe. The health benefits far out weigh (excuse the pun) the aesthetics but I want to be the best version of me SO I will address these challenges as part of my constant research. Congrats on your decision and wi#hing you the best possible outcomes.

If 60 is the new 40, then 41 must be the new 21? LOL! In my case, genetics plays a huge role and I am not of particularly good genetic stock. No one in our family ever really lived much past 82 and my brother and I both decided not to have children of our own.

I finally found the perfect spot on here!! I turned 60 a couple of months ago and am having VSG on May 2. I have been thinking about it for about a year and saw the surgeon for the first time in December. I am currently day 8 on the preop diet and am actually amazed that it is going so well and I am not struggling with it at all. Developed serious weight issues about the time I turned 50 and lost 40 pounds on my own doing Atkins. Then I quit smoking after 35 years and have gained 100 lbs. since 2009. Have been unable to work since 2016 due to severe asthma and back pain and (worst) unable to ride the motorcycle with my husband in over 2 years. I want my life back!!

I am so glad to find some peeps in my age bracket!! We got this!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
