Why is shepard's pie called pie when it is really a casserole?

Okay - I'll bite. I'm not a stupid person, really I'm not. What's a Shepard's Pie?

It may be a geographical difference or just my ignorance. I'm south of the Mason Dixon line. We do squash casserole and I make a mean Hobo Pie...although it's not a pie either. Sorry.

Isn't shepard's pie basically a casserole dish that has meat, corn, and mashed potatoes? That's how I've had it!

Although yeah, not really of the pie persuasion....

I had my gallbladder ultrasound today and thought I would pass out. She had me hold my breath.... lots of times....too weird.

Anyone know why?

I asked Dh, he is an xray tech. He said it is because as you breathe it moves, they need it still there fore you must hold your breath! :)

Yeah, why is it called Shepherds Pie when it has no shepherds in it?

In the UK Shepherds pie is minced lamb (Ithink you call it ground lamb), topped with mashed potatoes. We also have cottage pie which is minced beef topped with mashed potatoes. Cumberland pie is minced meat, topped with potatoes and then topped with cheese.

These are all no good for bandsters as they are slider foods

In the US, we use beef instead of lamb but still call it Shepherd's Pie.

I really like Shephers pie, It is a pity I must not eat it any more. However my surgeon did say that I could eat slider foods if I went out to a restaurant, in order to avoid any embarassment with PBs

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
