My first fill . . .

Recommended Posts

I had my first fill this morning. No problem. After the fill the doc had me drink some Water and it was fine. I don't know how much fill I got, but I sure don't feel any different. I'm liquids for the next 2 days, not clear, just liquids, Protein Shakes, Soups, pudding, that kind of stuff. Then I can go back to solids as tolorated. I go back in 3 weeks for another fill. Hope I can get some restriction soon, I'm hungry!!!

Had my first fill yesterday. I don't know about the rest of you but for me it was weird!

I was on liquids last night and back to normal food today, I can tell the difference with only 1.5cc fill.

I did make a big mistake in the middle of the night, woke up dying of thirst, took a big gulp of Water and a few seconds later thought I was back to day 3 post-op. The pain passed in about 20 minutes but it definately wasn't fun. Anyone else keep forgeting to sip not gulp? That's been my toughest adjustment especially not drinking when eating.

Hi Lizzee,

Way to go! Sorry to hear about the night trauma. Me too, I forget to drink at all, I used to drink a lot with meals. And now I get a sudden need to drink lots, and of course gulp - and then I remember. So far so good, but your experience is a timely reminder :)

It's 2 days since my first fill and I still feel nothing. :)

I'm hungry! Now I can't wait to go back in 3 weeks to get another, hopefully that will give me some restriction.

Had my first fill this week, four weeks post banding. Didn't think I would need it as for the first 3 weeks I wasn't hungry and could only managed small portions, but things really changed over the next week!

Found out when I saw my surgeon that I had 4.5mls added in the OR ... which explains why I hadn't been hungry! :)

He increased my fill to 5mls and I go back in two weeks. I didn't have to go back onto fluids, he said to just be cautious and if I had any troubles go to mushies. I was fine the night of the fill ... but then over the next 48 hours it was like I tightened up .. went back onto thick fluids and now feeling good again. Hunger gone, and back to small portions. Yippee, I love my band :clap2:

I also can't wait for my first fill on the 29th. I just hope that I feel some restriction, even a little would be great. I'm tired of being hungry. I read once when someone told them they wanted them to be aggressive with their first fill. I'm thinking of trying it. I live almost 2 hours away and don't want to keep making trips if I don't have to. I know, we need to be patient, but I can always hope.

I posted this already on the thread "when is your first fill?" but I think this thread would have been more appropriate - for those who HAVE been filled. So here is cut/paste of what I wrote:

I have just returned home after my first fill. The doc told me that all bands are "primed" with 3-4 cc of saline during surgery, and I checked Allergan's instruction manual (for surgeons, available online) and indeed these are the instructions that Allergan gives. Priming the tubing replaces all the "dead space" with Fluid. That amount shouldn't provide restriction.

So today he put 1 cc in my band, no flouro - 1 poke but with a little searching. I don't notice any restriction. He said to call next week and we'll schedule another fill if I don't notice restriction. He doesn't wait a month between fills (he said "that just wastes time.") I'm all for that.

I notice lots of people say they got 4cc or 3 cc or whatever, on the first fill. It makes you wonder - since bands are filled during surgery with 3 cc, if those docs are doing fills by adding an additional 4 cc,s or they add 1 cc to make a total of 4 cc.

holly....

my doc told me my band is empty( but is empty really empty or is empty really primed????) i'm SO confused :faint: (i can't get over how the protocol with everyone seems so different) .....i go on the 29th for my first fill and they only put in 1 - 2 ccs.....but, at least like your doc, i can go every 2 weeks after my first fill until i reach the "sweet spot"....so i am happy about that ....i can't eat everything like you, but i seem to be able to eat as much as i want as long as i really chew everything first.....trying to make good choices....i can't eat bread, but toast is okay ( had that once when out for breakfast) .... hopefully we'll all reach that "sweet spot" soon and the real work and weight loss will begin ..... eileen

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
