EBW - Excess Body Weight

Recommended Posts

How do you calculate it -- from starting weight 6 months before surgery, or from surgery day? Just found out my surgeon calculates it from my highest weight since he started seeing me, and my goal weight at 150, which puts me at 40% EBW lost. This led me to wonder how everyone else does it?

Excess Body Weight is basically your weight minus your ideal body weight. There are a few different formulas for calculating "ideal body weight," but for the most part they rely on some variation of height, gender, and age. Here are some example formulas (sorry its in Kg not pounds).

G. J. Hamwi Formula (1964)

Male: 48.0 kg + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 feet
Female: 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 feet
Invented for medicinal dosage purposes.

B. J. Devine Formula (1974)

Male: 50.0 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet
Female: 45.5 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet
Similar to the Hamwi Formula, it was originally intended as a basis for medicinal dosages based on weight and height. Over time, the formula became a universal determinant of IBW.

J. D. Robinson Formula (1983)

Male: 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet
Female: 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet
Modification of the Devine Formula.

D. R. Miller Formula (1983)

Male: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet
Female: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet

I calculated mine from day off surgery but it's probably not the right way to do it. Better to do it from your highest weight.

I would agree with doing it from your highest weight because that will give you the true amount of total loss.

I am tracking that weight, but will also track my surgery weight if it's different so I can differentiate between pre and post surgery losses.

If you're measuring the effects of the surgery....you have to go by your weight the day of surgery. Since, obviously, before the surgery...you lost the old fashioned way.

I just talked to the RD about this yesterday and the way she did it was "using the insurance tables formula" (which she said was old school and not accurate but is what they are required to use).

For Females:

5' feet = 100lbs

every inch over 5 feet = 5lbs

So for a 5'4" female, Ideal Weight=120lbs.

****

Surgical Weight - Ideal Weight=EBW (at surgery)

(Surgical Weight - Ideal Weight) X 60% (RNY) = Estimated Weight Loss from Your RNY Surgery

By her calculation at 60% I would end up at about 160lbs +/- 10%. I told her if that is where I end up, then she better get the rubber room and straight jacket ready for me, cuz things will not end pretty. LOL. I did not rearrange my guts for a 60lbs weight loss. LOL. ROFLMFAO!

I think I'd be OK at 160 lbs, but I would understand your frustration! :-)

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
