Terrified & Excited!

Recommended Posts

I'm terrified of dying during surgery and also terrified of dying cause I didn't get it!! How did you guys calm yourselves? I don't even have a surgery date yet and am having anxiety. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Honestly the surgeries today have practically no risk of death (I think the number is like one out of twenty-five hundred), so the fear of death from the surgery didn't even cross my mind. Death as a complication of my obesity on the other hand felt like a time bomb with a count down timer that was ticking down, but that I couldn't actually see.

I am more concerned about complications than I am about actual death. Part of putting my fears to rest was to ensure I had complete confidence in my surgeon (based on his experience, reviews, empathy towards me and my fears) as well as confidence that the hospital I would be in had a dedicated bariatric unit so I would receive the level of care I needed and deserved.

Lots of research helped as well and following all the rules you're given for before and after surgery reduces the risk of complications.

Your risk of death as a side effect of health problems due to remaining fat....is far greater statistically than your risk of dying in a planned surgery with preventative testing.

Don't be scared of the surgery. Be scared of not having surgery. It's a more logical fear.

I will admit I am having fears about dying and about complications but am just trying to relax about them--accept them as normal fears before surgery and not a sign that I am making a bad decision. My main reasons for having the surgery are to improve/resolve my diabetes before I get further complications and to improve my mobility so that I can do more of the things I love to do. Those reasons haven't changed, and I still believe that the surgery is my best chance to improve my health.

My surgery is two weeks from tomorrow, and I expect the nerves to increase between now and then. May we all have some peace as we move toward our surgery days!

Thank you, I'm thankful that I'm not being irrational. I'm super excited for you (Only 2 weeks!) [emoji4]

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
