First Stall - less than 2 weeks after surgery???

Recommended Posts

Is it possible I’ve hit my first stall less than 2 weeks after surgery?? I wrote on another post that hunger returned with a force 9 days after surgery, which is devastating to me. Now, I’ve been at a stall for the past 5 days or so, and have actually gained 2 pounds. I don’t understand what’s going on. Is it possible I’ve hit a first stall this soon ?? I’m 2 weeks post op today.

Hey There,

I,m right there with you. I am 3 weeks removed from my surgery and I have been in a stall for a week. From what I read I think it's common. I've lost a total of 37lbs 25 of that was on my 2 week pre-op diet. My doctor told me after 3 weeks I could start exercising more. I think we just need to hang in there and stick with our plan and it will start back up.

@nycgirl18 What procedure did you have?

I had RNY on April 3. Lost 15 on the pre op diet and another 18 pretty quickly post op. However I’ve been within the same 2-3 pound range since last Thursday or so.

It sounds like you're just on a stall. Just stick with it, keep moving forward, and the scale will begin to move again.

I don't think it's that unusual from what I've heard and been experiencing. I'm at week 3 now and at the same issue. Last week I was approved to start soft foods, 2oz per meal. Last week I was allowed 1 meal a day, this week it's 2 meals. I noticed yesterday when I stepped on the scale that I actually went up 1 lb since I started eating.

Looking back, I see that my stall started on the 7th (Week #3.5), and this morning I weighed the exact same amount (on the 17th -- 10 days later). I've checked in with the measuring tape, and I'm not getting measurable losses there, either.

Stalls are demoralizing!!!! :( The one thing we have to remember is that they are common and they end, eventually.

Here's hoping ALL of our stalls end soon!!

The PA in my surgeons office explained stalls in a way I had never heard before and it really helps.

Our bodies rely on the fat and the sugars that we intake through our diet, and our muscles absorb a lot of the crap because it's a quick and easy fuel. When we diet, our bodies aren't getting all of the junk and we are able to drop pounds at a pretty steady weight. But as our bodies get used to the new amounts of fuel, it slows down the weight loss a little in order for it to properly adjust how much the body absorbs vs how much we expel when we use the bathroom.

Usually this shouldn't last for too long, maybe a few weeks. And while it can be very aggravating, one suggestion we were given in my support group is to buy a spool of yarn, and once a week, measure your waist line, cut the yarn and tape it to the wall. Over the next few weeks, while the scale might not be moving, the yarn should be still getting shorter every week.

I stalled less than 2 weeks after surgery as well. It's common to hear of the 3 week stall. I had lost so much pre op, 27lbs, that my body went into a immediate stall after my first week. I was loosing again by week 4. I think that increasing my calories when I went into soft foods and exercise helped break that stall.

It happens to most- hang in there and stay on program. My guess is that you’ll drop soon and more than a lb or two :)

The answer is NO! Stay off the scale for 3-4 months. What your going through happens to most everyone & you should be concerned with nutrition & healing at this point. Don’t worry about your weight at this point. That will come later. And I know it feels like forever but it’s really not that long. Peace out!

I feel like such a failure already.

Wrong answer! Your still in the healing phase. There really are no such thing as stalls this early out. You’ll be fine just don’t deviate from your post-op plan.

Thanks for all the replies. It’s just so frustrating and demoralizing to go from seeing a decline on the scale each day to none .. and even a pound or 2 up.

I am having trouble getting in all of my Protein each day, but Protein Shakes are also very high calorie. I’ve been trying to stay around the 500 calorie mark, which makes it almost impossible to get everything in. I am speaking to my nutritionist tomorrow and hopefully she can give me some more guidance / reassurance.

Hon dont count calories count macros my program never ever has a calorie goal because there is no legitimate way to figure out how many calories you need except for a very specific test not offered by most clinics. Instead get in Protein Water limit net carbs my program is 70-100 grams protein a day 64 ounces of Fluid and less than 50 net carbs

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
