Establishing/Sustaining Support

Recommended Posts

As we start out on our Weight Loss Journey it is always nice to have someone share the trek. Often,we talk about this or that person being unsupportive. Who is your main support person? Is it your husband, your wife, your mother or father, your significant other, your partner, a good friend or your children. Who do feel has "your back" no matter what?
Or is the friends you have made on Bariatric Pal?
I'll start with me since I brought the subject up. My main one is my son, he is super supportive, is happy with my weight victories, understands when my weight stalls and I get cranky. I have 2 friends who have gone through WLS and all my new friends on Bariatric Pal who have taught me so much.
So okay, who do you have whose help you know you can rely on?

Hubby, daugher, bestie:) And Mom...but mom makes me kinda crazy, too. LOL.

Hubby and bestie are in the trenches with me, going for walks and crazy adventures. They are my rocks.

Daughter calls from college, asks how things are going, says she's proud of me, is generally an awesome kid:) We have a standing date to "walk together" on the phone when she's on her way home to her apartment from campus.

Mom is sweet...but dingy and can be a little bad to encourage me to eat stuff I shouldn't out of "kindness"...in her defense...when I say...Mom, what the hell? She goes...Oh Poop! I forgot! She doesn't mean to try to sabotage me....but it's her nature to feed people. LOL:)

The hubs, hands down #1, then my 3 daughters - particularly Dominique, and a couple other friends. Although the hubs has no idea of the struggle, he is cheering me on - but can also be a bugger for bringing in snack chit - the rule is it has to be crap I won't eat no matter what - chocolate donuts cheetos, fritos - I cannot even stand the smell of fritos....

My husband and I are doing this together. His surgery is in about 4 to 5 months. We've been dieting and working out together. He's my biggest cheerleader and I hope I am his.

My best friend is the reason I chose to have wls. She had gastric bypass eight years ago and she looks fantastic. She's knowledgeable, a great calming influence for when I panic, and down to help with anything. For example when I get discharged on Friday, I'm going to her house for 48 hours because she lives closer to the hospital than I do.

That is nice of her, I have nobody left here between here and Columbus where my surgery will,be performed. All my gal, pals from when I last lived there in 1981. Probably all died,or moved away. Last one I heard from was downsizing and, moving into a condo, a 1 bedroom, type of condo. 😓

My hubs and my kids are my rock! My husband does the cooking during the week since I am the workaholic, and has completely changed not only what he cooks, but how as well. First it was my gluten sensitivity, then the radical diet change prepping for my surgery.he will sometimes make a separate meal for me depending on what my food intake is for the day. He’s learned to cook with Protein Powder.< br>
My daughters are great too, especially my oldest. She is on my “diet” with me for the most part. She’s always been a big veggie eater, and loooves the Protein Shakes I make in the AM. She also tries to help me read labels so I can enter the info into MyFitnessPal. She is 8.

My youngest (4) is like the police. “Mommy I think you added too much fruit in your shake, ” or “Mommy you can’t have any of my Easter candy or the doctor will yell at you!” [emoji23]

You have to love a child's thinking. "Too much fruit in the shake Mommy" at least they understand and are trying to help. Almost mothering you in reverse. And the label reading of the 8 year old can only strengthen hervreading skills. Only, bad thing, she may tell everyone at Sharing Time about Mommy and her weight struggles. Hey keep up what you're doing, with that much family support you are going to be a success.😛

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
