Gastric Band vs. Sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I have the band, but due to a ton of complications, am looking into a revision to the sleeve.

I'm just wondering how my life will change. Is what you are able to eat the same for the band as it is for the sleeve? Do you still throw up if you overdo it?

How is the surgery recovery different? How many days in the hospital? Which recovery is harder? How is the post-op surgery for the sleeve different for the band?

Is there anything else that really changes?

Thanks!

Hello... you may not have a choice???? My surgeon told me that once he’s in there and he sees what has happened since my lap band was removed 4 years ago he may have to do a gastric bypass instead of a sleeve -he said each person is different and it depends on the scar tissue and other issues that could be related to my stomach and such. I have the sleeve as my first choice and told him he can make the best decision while he’s in there as to what to do for me- I trust my doctor 200%. Just talking to your doctor he may help you decide what’s best for you:) best of health to you!

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't thought of that.

I was just wondering how it's different. Like, I know what life is like with the band. Don't eat too fast or too much at a time, chew 25 times eraser sized bites or you'll throw up. Weight loss is fast, but not so fast that you seem sick. (around 10lbs a month). Is it the same for the sleeve? or the Gastric bypass?

I know how the band works. Just trying to compare.

My sister had gastric bypass 10 years ago her recovery was much different than my lap band in recovery....I know she eats a lot less at a setting, She has dumping syndrome with sweets & can not drink alcohol at all. I didn’t have any of those issues with my Band in. So whether it’s sleeve or gastric bypass I know it will change my life more significantly even the band. I hope those have gone through it already can give you more insight after June 5 I’ll be able to tell you more :-) I hope the best for you!

I have the band and have suffered 10+ years with it. Not sure what damage has been done to my stomach by the band. I told my surgeon that I prefer the sleeve but he can go ahead with Rny if he needs to. But he did warn that it may have to be two surgeries

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
