Feeling Hungry & Freaked out

Recommended Posts

I was bypassed on 4/3 and have enjoyed not feeling hungry. However, I woke up his morning hungry which has progressed throughout the day. It’s not time to have another shake or broth yet, I’ve been drinking Water and had a sugar free popsicle - but still so hungry!! I have definitely “gulped” water a few times - is it possible my pouch has stretched out already?? I also have only lost about a pound in the last 2 or so days. I’m a worrier and really really freaked out this surgery won’t work for me.

No. It’s not possible that your pouch is stretched.

If you were on a liquid diet before surgery it has been weeks since you have had solid food. It’s ok to be hungry. Not everyone experiences the “I’m never hungry again” feeling that you hear about, I certainly didn’t.

Just follow your guidelines. You are fine.

I was hungry right after surgery and had 10 ounces of liquids. My nurse freaked out by the surgeon was happy. Any liquids I could tolerate was just fine for her. I stalked on week two of my weight loss for a whole week. Ate the end of the mushy phase I was sick and tired of mush and a bit like “WILL IT BE LIKE THIS FOREVER?” Fast forward 4 1/2 months and I’m down 60lbs and counting with several stalls. I basically eat what I can tolerate but just very small amounts. I’m happy and think this is the best decision of my life! Don’t worry! The weight will come off. The process will work. You’ve got this.

Every now and then I will get small hunger pangs, but for the most part, I don't really feel hungry. Unfortunately, on this beautiful, warm Philly evening I am getting some small ones badly but I've set up a hard cut off time for food. Nothing to eat after 7:00PM. Plus, I've reached my Protein goal for the day - well, a little bit above it actually. I am at 110g and the target is 100. Maybe I am just bored outta my ever-lovin' mind.

I was freaking starving. Could have gnawed my own leg off by one week after surgery on just protien drinks and clears.

Crazy hunger didn't go away until around three weeks post op when I started eating about 1000 calories per day.

Since then? I've felt terrific.

Have been maintaining and losing well on 1000-1200 calories a day. Will stay here for the first 18 months, or until goal...when I'll start figuring out maintenance.

25 pounds to go! Woot!

You drank 10oz of Fluid at once? Part of what’s freaking me out is drinking liquids- I don’t chug Water but I can easily take 3 or 4 good sized sips just within the past few days with only some grumbles in my stomach. If I can drink 4 oz of water at once and still be so hungry how is 4oz of food going to fill me up for very long ?

How far out from surgery are you ? What do you eat to get your protein in? I’m still on liquids but definitely not meeting the protein goal - have only been getting in 35grams or so each day

Thanks for the reply!! I hope so. Just really freaked out - today I feel like I did in each past diet right before it went out the window. Not in terms of cravings - just in terms of not being able to focus anything but the feeling of hunger. I’m not craving anything other than this stupid hunger to go away!!

Hi nycgirl18. Not a chance your pouch is stretched out already! I had RNY bypass in 2005 & had an EGD in 2014 & my results were normal pouch size. Get that Protein in daily along with all your supplements. Gotta do it for your new, life changing opportunity to be successful. Keep me updated please!

Really?? And did you ever go back to eating more normally or drinking carbonated beverages? I am absolutely fine so far with my new way of eating but the one thing I miss sooo much is a crisp cold seltzer Water [emoji30][emoji30][emoji30]

Hi girlie. I did go back to eating more normally & gained back up to 310. Felt like such a failure. Like who goes through this surgery and screws it up like I did. This is just my experience. Others do so so well.

Oh I’m so sorry to hear that. Are you back on a journey trying to lose the weight ? I’m afraid that’s what’s going to happen to me also so if you can provide any advice of what not to do Id appreciate it so much. I hope you don’t mind me asking.

Oh yeah I got back on track for sure. I'm comfy between 140 - 145 lbs. I prep/cook almost all meals and still focus on Protein and Water. It's been super helpful for me to pack a lunch cooler daily including several 20 oz bottles of crystal light. If I do go out to eat, I pre-plan what I'm going to order before going to the restaurant. I spend Sunday afternoons prepping food for the week. I did Weight Watchers at work for a few years which was a great way to keep me accountable and learn new ideas and easy recipes. Weight training and cardio have made a huge difference in my journey, and make me feel strong and more confident. Love shopping now! Lots of small changes over the last few years. It's been scary but so worth it. I know when I don't want to get on the scale, I need to asap. lol

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
