Has anyone's sleep apnea worsened since surgery?

Recommended Posts

Despite being quite a bit less in weight now, it looks like my sleep apnea has gotten worse. Last night I had an average of over 5 apneas per hour. Has this happened to anyone else?

I have not lost much weight yet but, I did want to chime in and say that 5 or less events per hour puts a person in the normal range. Mine is severe and I would just about pay to be under 10 per hour from where I am at now.

Still doesn't seem like you should have more than you did pre op. If you were under 5 pre op you were doing great!

Yeah, I know. I am just alarmed because before surgery I was less than 1 apnea an hour.

Morning Matty. I don't know if this is the case, but sleep apnea happens a lot in older folks due to their muscle tone weakening. I wonder if as you loose weight you may have some tone issues in your neck that results in increased apneas. I'm taking a stab in the dark of course. One thing I will say, I wouldn't worry about it until you've seen those results for a least a week or more. All kinds of factors could be in play, you could have opened your mouth in your sleep to have caused the machine to think you had an apnea.

I agree with everyone else but understand your concern. Right now it's hard not to notice every single thing-big and small. Our bodies are in HUGE and rapid transition. So I think the thing to watch is trends over TIME. That means to me maybe 3-4weeks. If my numbers and the trend line are now trending up rather than down, then it's time for me to ask my doc questions.

Everything from snot to a shift in your soft palate cuz it's lost fat and has hanging skin, to having a little bug, so what you ate could cause those things.

But also, 5 events per night is awesome! What were you having at dx?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
