Am I eating too much???

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Need some advice please. I was banded 12 days ago, am on mushies, and unfortunately ate quite a lot of ice cream today - my emotional hunger got the better of me. I really thought I wouldn't be able to do this anymore, and am disappointed in myself.

Even when I just eat the mushies, I feel I might be eating a bit more than I should, but I get hungry.

Has anyone else had similar problems?

Thanks, Jenny:confused::hungry:

Jenny, the mushie stage is pretty hard for some people. I limited my meals to 3 oz total. Also, even though it tastes good, the ice cream will not fill you up because it melts and turns to liquid, passing thru the band. Make sure you are getting a lot, more than you think you need, of liquid (water, crystal light etc) and it may help with the hunger. Even though I am on full food now, I still keep my one meal daily at a low amount and make up for it with 2 Protein shakes....

im just about done on the mushie stage and I felt the same way at times. I havnt had my first fill yet so I think that has a factor in it, they say once you start getting the fills you will feel more restricted.

Maybe this will help for the time being. I was told all drinks are to be consumed at room temp. No ice, no ice Water, nothing COLD for 3 weeks. It will cause spasms. Maybe if you think about it in these terms your mind will not let you eat the ice cream...

Jenny, I've been on soft foods over two weeks, with two more to go--my biggest saviour has been keeping up with the required 6-8 cups of liquid daily.

Especially Protein drinks! I mix dry powder whey Protein isolate (chocolate malt/belgian chocolate) with Water and it satiates me for a very lon-n-n-g-g-g-g time.

Dave01 is right--the amount of protein you take in makes a huge difference in your energy level--not to mention not losing your hair!!

Ice cream bad, Protein shake good.........!

Thanks to everyone for their advice. I might try the Protein shakes. Hey, Make33, what is this about losing your hair??

Also, are others out there still struggling with eating emotionally (even though the band makes you feel full)?

Thanks,

Jenny :hungry:

In educating and preparing myself for surgery, I read everything I could find out about foods (He-l-l-l-l-o-o-o, guess who didn't care about Health class in school?!!)

At womenshealth.about.com, it says "Protein deficiency causes hair loss, fatigue, edema, muscle weakness, and a delay in wound healing. A lack of adequate Protein may also lead to depression, anxiety, irritability, apathy, and other mental health conditions, as well as cause a number of physical health issues from gallstones to colds, headaches, low blood pressure, anemia, irregular heart rates, and in extreme cases, death"

Anyway, that convinced me to care more about my protein intake! I know the above is for extreme cases, but we have to put something in our bodies, why not protein? (I'm not much of a meat eater, though, so mine generally comes in the form of fish, dairy, eggs, and whey protein isolate shakes.)

I don't see where this will change once I'm on solid food, just may be able to decrease the supplements.

Hope this helps, Jenny...:bounce:

Thanks Make 33, for the info. I do remember that Protein keeps you feeling full for longer - so I'll up the protein a bit and see what happens.

Do not worry-you will soon adjust to the band. I loved ice cream but gave it up. It will go down easily, but it is not the best as far as nutrition, etc. Bad habit and hard to break. Be well. Fran

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
