Approaching surgery date is freaking me out!!

Recommended Posts

So I'm scheduled for VSG on April 25th. I am a mess of emotions right now! I have gone from extremely excited to nervous wreck, and right now I seem to be the latter. It may have something to do with me reading other's post-op horror stories? One part of me is having second thoughts and the other part of me is saying I have fought too hard to even get to this point! Anyone else felt like this leading up to the day???

Everyone goes through the last minute jitters. You start your liquid diet and things get very REAL....and a lot of people freak out a little:)

Trust your saner self. Trust the person who already made the decision and has been working toward this and fighting for it for months.

Nerves are natural. It'll be ok:)

I have the same feelings! My surgery is the 18th. I was excited until someone said my surgery is next week. Then I panicked a little bit. Now I'm back to being happy about it.

If it helps? I had a super easy surgery experience. Zero nausea, minimal pain, no vomiting, perfect recovery. LOVE my sleeve:) I've felt terrific from the day of surgery. Worst part for me was the presurgical diet. Everything else was much easier than I expected.

Figured it couldn't hurt to hear good experience....while you're reading horror stories. LOL:) (and everyone does that, too)

I'm sure I'll have more burst of panicking closer to the date, but by morning I'll be excited again lol

The last minute jitters are totally normal because this is a serious undertaking. However, the chances are almost 99.999% that you will have a good outcome. As my surgeon said to me, "This is the most 'routine' major surgery nowadays. It isn't like it used to be even just 5 years ago."

Thank you! That is very reassuring and makes total sense! I guess I've just been psyching myself out this passed week, but I feel a little better now that I've had some positive vibes sent my way!

The post-op road has not been an easy one to travel for me but what kept me going was the clear knowledge that every day I would become a little healthier. Immediately after surgery, I went from 7 medications to 1. Celebrate every win, no matter how small it may seem. Also, be patient with yourself and allow time to heal and feel better. Today is the first day that I actually feel like myself and I am 28 days post-op. I finally have the energy, desire, and drive to go join a gym and get my workout on. When times are tough, just keep looking hour to hour and day to day.

Also, please don't make the mistake I did by tempting fate and trying to go back to old habits. I had a soft pretzel after only two weeks post-op and I felt miserable for days. That alone probably caused some significant setbacks and is why it took me almost 30 days to feel strong. In my previous life, food was joy, happiness, sadness, and pleasure. I reached for the soft pretzel precisely because I was feeling sad and bereft. Not only did it taste like saw dust and feel very bad in my stomach, but I felt absolutely no satisfaction in eating it, whereas previously it would have been an instant pick me up. Post-surgery will be an immense change. If you are an emotional eater, my guess is after this surgery, eating won't produce the same result as it used to.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
