It's amazing how much this surgery changes you. I used to hate seafood of any kind. Today I discovered that I now like tuna fish. It goes down real smooth and doesn't lay like a rock. Plus, it's considered a high quality Protein at 15g per serving. I'm also enjoying getting my protein through sources other than shakes. It's amazing that tuna almost tastes like a real flaky chicken.

It's honestly easier to eat the canned tuna than the canned chicken. I even added a little light mayo. I'm excited to see what other foods that I did not used to like but like now. I discovered I no longer like pepperoni ... that was a surprise to me.

Swapping out tuna for pepperoni will definitely get you a thumbs up from your dietitian! No wonder your weight loss is stellar!

You will find tuna pouches are great too. My favorite is the tuna with herbs and garlic. It also comes in an original tuna salad and Buffalo tuna. A little kick to it but great. Each packet is around 100 calories and is either 14, 15, or 16 grams of Protein. I also have found shrimp to be great. I dont like it cold but steamed is like heaven. I could never stand squash before and now spaghetti squash is one of my favorite meals. Keep trying new things and you will find survival food a little more interesting. I have been following your posts and lovr the honesty in them. You are doing a great job. One day at a time.

My tastes have changed too - I love and crave salad (used to think it was a waste of a good chew!). On the other hand, directly opposite to you @Mattymatt, I now really dislike canned or pouch tuna - formerly a comfy staple - now I find it dry and nasty ew ew ew!!

Happy with fresh tuna, thankfully - raw preferably - or any other fresh seafood - I would have tasted to lose that food love! Oyster season has just started here in NZ - I can only eat three raw oysters, but yum yum, and Protein to boot!

My taste buds have changed a lot too. I find that I can't ever tell you what I'm hungry for. I have a hard time picking a place to eat or a recipe to cook. It's a good and a bad thing!

I think I understand as eating is just part of the daily routine now. I can't say that I enjoy it like I used to which is ultimately a good thing because the pre-surgery me was living to eat. Living to eat is more miserable than the feeling of it being neutral.

Is that the normal way of things? I"m still stuck in pre-surg and I feel that way already. I used enjoy the taste and sensations of. food, don't now. Hadn't mentioned it on here because I thought I was just weird, I've divorced myself from all the former food friends I used to have but strange thing, when I see them it's like they are strangers I feel no real relationship with them any more. They are just things passing by? Is that normal? You're the only person I feel safe asking, used to ask Fluffy Chix but she's too wrapped in her own successes at weight loss to talk anymore[emoji37]

I haven't really noticed any change in my taste buds, except that I can't handle anything spicy right now. But, that's more of a stomach rebellion that a change in my taste preference.

I agree, I get no enjoyment over smells or tastes anymore. I think this is supposed to be one of the benefits. I personally think it keeps my appetite in line. I’m guessing that our taste buds will come back after time. It’s so new to us! You aren’t a lone. I just make good choices and Celebrate the victory of my weight loss. Food is no longer my friend.

And Fluffy talks about spicy refried bean mash with low-fat cheese. Of course she's a Texan and was weaned from Mothers Milk to that diet!

But I am a Texan and I LOVE spicy foods: Mexican, Thai, and all the rest!

Hey @frust8

There are still foods I love! I went to a restaurant and ordered tuna carpaccio - 6 thin slices of raw tuna seared a little around the edges (seared before slicing) with 6 slices cucumber, tiny dots of wasabi mayo, tiny dots of shaved red chilli, and drizzled with citrusy ponzu sauce. It was a pants-down-party in my mouth!! But - even though each slice was maybe 3 inches x1 inch and very thin, the first two were great, the next two nice, and the last two were “I need the protein”.

I suspect even back as a champion eater, I only ever really loved the first few mouthfuls - but then in the BS (before surgery) days I didn’t realise I wasn’t loving the meal the same until I had eaten three cups full and felt pogged!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
