To one extent or another I think most of us have gone through a pre-op diet with the goal of shrinking our liver. While most of these diets are high Protein low carb (getting into ketosis is the quickest way to shink your liver). They also run the gammot. For me it was a reasonably manageable Protein Shake for Breakfast and lunch, followed by a dinner with a lean protein as the star. Some folks have 100% liquid diets and there is even someone who was forced to drink nothing but skim milk for a month.

I am curious was that last line a typo or are you really being asked to eat squash?

Oh sorry it means sugar free juice

Ah, I should have guessed by the "h" in "yoghurt" that it was a British thing.

I'm on 2 shakes and a lean meat and veggie dinner for the remaining 3 weeks before my op (only shakes/liquids on the last day before). I had my first shake late this morning after they delivered (formulite which is stevia sweetened because asparatame and other sweeteners give me nasty headaches/migraine) and I felt really off and queasy for at least an hour afterwards. The taste (honeycomb) was ok, but I think it was mostly the texture that really didn't agree with me. I'm hoping my body adapts quickly as I have a lot of them I need to drink between now and surgery!!! I'll try one of the choc-hazelnuts with very warm Water tomorrow morning with my usual 2 shots of coffee as a mochacino and see if that works better. And will try some blended with half cold water and half ice too.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
