Fat Guy Survival

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I’m Scott and I’m just over three months post sleeve. Down over 80 pounds now. This has been the best decision I have ever made. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner!

In prep for my procedure, I did a ton of research. And here’s one startling data point. Of all bariatric procedures done in the US, only 20% are on men. Yes, only 20%.

I’m on a mission now to create a community to help, motivate, coach and inspire other fat guys just like me to lead healthier lives.

I’d love to hear from you. Talk to you and create an army of former fat guys to help men make the best decision for themselves.

Let’s talk here or follow me on Twitter@fatguysurvival.

Thanks

I'm game - how can I help?

Sounds like a laudable goal. However, bear in mind the most common reason so many more women have WLS than men is that so many men have the "I don't need anyone's help" mindset. It is hard for a lot of men to admit they need help in the first place and even harder to accept it. It's the same reason more women seek help from mental health professionals. Once you can get more men to accept that there's no shame in asking for help, half your battle will be won.

You are exactly right. Whether its stigma, ego, lack of confidence, lack of knowledge, men--who would really beneift from a bariatric procedure--aren't doing it enough. And that's my mission in creating The Fat Guy Survival Guide--to be able to connect with and create a supportive community to help people realize that a life changing solution is at their fingertips. Would love your help and support in driving this mission with me.

Sorry, I'm not a "community" kind of guy. I'm the kind of guy who makes a decision and sticks with it, I don't need cheerleaders or support from anyone but my wife, nor am I the type to go into detail about my "journey". I value my privacy which is why you'll never see a before or after picture of me either. I'm happy to come here to learn a few things and offer common sense advice, which often runs counter to the advice offered my many here. Think Ron Swanson but with a doctorate in sarcasm and without the outdoor and survival skills...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
