Answering Honestly

Recommended Posts

Hello! Newbie here!

I've already received the go-ahead and referral from my GP, so I'm impatiently waiting for the first meeting with my prospective surgeon (June 2nd seems very far away!), and they sent me a packet of papers to fill out; there are two questions right next to each other: "Do you binge eat?" and "Are you an emotional eater?" I am afraid that answering those two questions honestly would be cause for immediate denial. Not only that, I have Bipolar II Disorder (though I have been stable for at least 5 years thanks to the right cocktail of medications).

But there is nowhere to write an explanation about any of these things.

I mean, yes, I have been known to binge eat and to eat emotionally, and though I haven't been ready to make the commitment to weight loss in the past, I am certainly ready now - I am willing to do whatever it takes, including seeing a therapist or doing group therapy.

Perhaps I am being silly, and no matter what I put they will meet with me and talk it out, but... I dunno. I will definitely answer honestly, but I am a bit hesitant about it.

Did all you post-ops out there answer these questions honestly?

If you guys have the same conditions (binge eating, emotional eating, Bipolar II), how difficult was it to "convince" your surgeon to do the surgery? And has it been successful in spite of these conditions?

I think you are pretty safe to answer these questions honestly. At the end of the day Surgeons want to perform the surgery and they don't generally deny you for those things (honestly if you were paying cash they probably wouldn't even ask). Besides that you will need to get a psychiatric clearance (presumably from your current doctor).

I wouldn't read too much into these questions, and if they are they also asking questions about your current diet my guess this is more for the nutrition tracking purposes than it is for the actual surgeon. Since many insurance companies require 3-6 months of nutrition classes they ask these questions so that your first meeting with the surgeon can count as class 1. That said don't share something you aren't comfortable sharing.

The reason they ask these questions is to find out if there’s s problem that needs to be addressed and resolve by getting help. The reasons why your possibly overeating will cause you to fail even after surgery. Do it the right way so you have a successful weight loss n stay off.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
