How will I know if something gets stuck

Recommended Posts

I was only banded 2 weeks ago, But I was wondering how everyone can tell that something got stuck.(I'm still on mushies) Besides probably throwing up, can u feel something is wrong?

When something gets stuck it feels like a golfball in your chest. Trust me.. you will know!! It hurts!! Definitely a good reminder NOT to eat fast and NOT to take big bites!

Trust me if something gets stuck you'll know it. Everyone has a different thing that they have to watch out for. For me it is Romain Lettuce. I have had it get stuck many times. It is usually a strange pain for 15-30 minutes. It will pass, but everytime it happens you'll do everthing that you can to keep it happening again.

My wife has trouble with chicken. Like I said everyone has a different food that is a problem.

Jessica:

I think that everyone gets stuck, at least once. So, don't make the same mistake I did. I tried a sip of Water figuring that it would move the stuck tunafish one way or the other. Then I felt like I was going to drown in my own kitchen. After that I found somebody said something on this site about taking the tiniest sip of something if you feel stuck.

I get a horrible pain in my left shoulder when I'm stuck.

I hope it never does happen to you, but it happens to most people at least once.

Think small......think slow.......good luck.

Just reading this thread is making me panic! I do get anxiety with this kinda stuff and I'm afraid I'll freak out if something gets stuck...(pre-banded person).

Funny thing, during one of my pre-op visits with the shrink, (who is banded), when he got stuck the first time he told me he "freaked out". Gee, falls under the category, "what not to tell the pre-banded patient in front of you" :)

Anyway, didn't someone mention that a few sips of grapefruit juice would clear it?

Can you breathe when this happens? How long till it goes away? Do you panic? (See, you can tell I'm a LITTLE anxious!!! :):help:

You can breathe, dont panic over that. You can breathe fine. You just cant swallow your own saliva (of which you produce copious quantities) and you may bring it back up - it takes me simply ages to do that and most times I dont, it passes eventually.

It hurts and its revolting but you learn pretty quickly how to avoid it. If its an everyday occurrence for you its quite likely that you're doing the wrong things - either choosing foods that dont agree with you personally, eating too fast, eating too big a bites or you are too tight and need Fluid removed.

for most people, drinking does not clear the blockage and ease the discomfort, it adds to it and makes it hurt worse. I can eat and drink together for the most part (but its meant to be against the rules) but absolutely not when I am stuck on something.

For a well managed band with a very compliant patient (and we ALL push the boundaries occasionally) being badly stuck or actually vomiting are not things that happen often.

A brief ooh, go down would you feeling happens a bit, there's many many times you need to pause eating to let things just move on through, but nobody would ever know about it and it doesnt hurt, its just your band reminding you how to behave!

pineapple. It has enzymes in it that will dissolve food. If you've ever stirred pineapple pieces into yoghurt, you'll know what I'm talking about. meat tenderizer is another one that I've heard.

Thanks for all the reponses. I ate tuna that didn't seem like it went down well. I had (what felt like) heart burn for about an hour...I didnt know if that was the stuck feeling or just something I should stay away from.

I can pretty much eat anything chewed well so far...but chicken and bread..no way. Chicken especially feels like it's ok for a little bit..even chewed well..then suddenly it's like it's right caught in there, and that was even before a fill. :faint:

Boy did I learn my lesson about chicken getting stuck. I became worried about the feeling after remembering the dietician at the clinic telling me about a woman who wasn't paying attention to what she was doing while on the phone and popped a half a chicken mcnugget in and it got stuck  so she had to have a complete unfill and she was self pay, $150.00 bucks each time. :paranoid

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
