How slow are you eating?

Recommended Posts

Immediately post-op my surgeons office said it should take 30 minutes to an hour to eat your meal.

Did anyone else get the same instruction? In six months post op now and wondering if we’re still supposed to eat that slow?

It’s a little frustrating! I hate eating now so I’d rather just get it done!

Eating slowly has been one of the hardest things for me. That said in the first month or so you are eating super slow to make sure things don't back up. I would think by 6 months you would be eating slowly but not nearly as slow as you were in the beginning (I'd like to think of this as the speed we probably should have been eating at our whole lives).

I am eating to where it is comfortable for me. If I take a bite too fast or too big, I definitely know that I have because I get pains in my chest. I was sleeved on 3/16 and my meals are generally around 30-45 minutes. I talk a lot between bites! LOL

I keep mine around 20-no more than-30 minutes. It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to receive the signals of satiety. So not only is it to keep from having nausea and cramping in your new tool, but also so you can hopefully know if you are ready to stop eating.

I'm the rebel in this topic. I chew my food the recommended amount of time, but I don't intentionally slow my eating down to stretch out a meal time. I def eat slower than pre op, but I don't think it takes me 30 minutes to finish. I think as long as you are only consuming the appropriate amount & you are chewing your food to an applesauce consistency, it shouldn't matter. Only if you are following both of those things. They like to say 30 minutes because it gives your mind time to catch up with your body and send those "full" signals. I premeasure out my food and I don't get "seconds" even if I don't feel full. This is why I don't feel bad if I finish a meal in 15 minutes.

I do exactly the same.

I chew every bite 30 times (I count). The slower I eat the better I feel after. I don't care if everyone else finishes first. If I eat too fast I feel terrible for about and hour after.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
