Hello, today is the day guys. I check in @5:30 am, still feeling a little anxious and nervous. I just want this to be over already. I actually went to sleep last night which was a surprise. I never really get sleep the night before surgery. I'll check back in after

I'm scheduled for 5/30. I have anxiety that I take medication for that controls it really well, but I'm unbelievably terrified about having surgery. I've never been anesthetized and I'm really scared. For me, the prep and post-op diet is totally not an issue. I'm trying to calm myself down, but the closer it gets, the more nervous I am. My mom and brother both had bypasses and neither seems to understand my fearfullness about this. I'm really scared something is going to go wrong and I'm going to die. I want this so bad, but keep seeing myself rolling out of the bed, gown flapping in the wind, butt cheeks on display, IV bag trailing behind me as I stumble down the hallway slurring, "Nope! Not today, you butchers!" as I make my escape. The weird part is, I'm an excellent surgical candidate, my surgeon is very experienced and I'm relatively healthy. Am I the only one who is terrified of the surgery itself, constantly second guessing this decision? But then, the idea of staying this way forever is awful. Just looking for some support

No. You’re not the only one. I too was terrified of the anesthesia because I had never been under before. But I had my EGD done and they used propofol. I was terrified before! Then I had it, everything went beautifully and I don’t remember a thing. Now my surgery is 2 days away and I’m ready. Just going through that one little anesthesia experience gave me the chance to be comfortable with it and relax. I also has everything very bad anxiety (hello klonopin on the daily!)
Fair warning though, the pre op diet (especially if you’re doing all liquid) is a real bear at first. I’m not saying that to be mean or make you anxious about something else, but personally I like to be super prepared because it helps aliviate some of my anxiety. You will be hangry, you will probably have a headache or two and you’ll get tired pretty easily. BUT after 3-4 days, you’ll feel fine. It’s all about beating that head hunger. Just drink Water like crazy [emoji38]
I am also a great candidate for my sleeve, have no problems like hernias or ulcers or polyps and my surgeon is top notch. I think you, like me, will get less anxious about the whole surgery once you get that little bit of anesthesia and come out of it fine.
If you ever need to talk to someone about anything, hit me up. Since we both have anxiety that requires medications, I think it would be good if we talked to each other. Similarities and all that.

Breathe! You're not alone. I'm certain most of us had some sort of reservations in the beginning. Ask yourself is it worth it to continue being unhealthy. If you're confident in your surgeon, share your concerns with him. He may be able to offer you some relief. Come on....you can do this!!!

Thank you for your reply, it is much appreciated. I would definitely love to hear how your surgery goes & am glad to hear that someone else with anxiety is going through this the same time as I am. Thanks for the advice on focusing on prepping, too. A distraction is pretty much always a good idea.

Thank you! Just hearing that I can do this makes me feel more confident. I'm meeting with my surgeon next week and am hoping that gives me an additional boost of confidence.

Yes it is! I’ve marked down the days when my diet will change, what I can eat, etc. I planned out every pre-op test and appt to the T. I collected all the information I could, whether it was given to me by my doctors or nurses or research I had done on my own or advice I received from previous sleevers. I bought certain things in advance. I track EVERYTHING on the Baritastic app. Planning every little thing controls my anxiety in a massive way. If you’re like me and worry about the price of eggs in Nebraska (a psychiatrist told me this once and it DOES describe me and is also funny) plan EVERYTHING. Put it in your calendar. Track it on an app. Keep in constant touch with all your doctors. If you’re working over a question, call you doctor and ask it. And ask on here too. My only word of warning, STAY OFF WEBMD. And, avoid the few negative posts you see on here. Realize that those people’s issues are typically very rare. I just plan plan plan.

I had thoughts just like this. For me, I realized they centered around things I couldn’t control. You have to surrender yourself to this process and trust the professionals. I think once you are there and see the team of people who will work on you and be there for you, you may feel more comfort.
One nurse laid her hands down my legs and across my stomach as I was falling asleep, almost laying on me, telling me “you are ok, you are safe, we are taking good care of you”. The thought of it makes me want to cry, it was so sweet, and she didn’t have to do that for me, but she did. These people know what you need, trust the process. You will be ok. [emoji169]

Hi Cleo, it’s not too nice the 1st day. Don’t be shy to ask for analgesia. Remember not to wait too long also as I found the time it takes nurses to bring it to you can easily stretch out to 40min if they’re busy. If you’re prone to nausea ask for iv anti emetic to be given to you at same time. This will save you having to chase up nurses and feeling queasy till they come back.

remember if they give you something and you feel it’s not working after 30-40min to ask for something else. They will have a cocktail of things prescribed.

Its great you’re sleeved now and I know you’re feeling like crap but you really won’t know yourself in 3-4 days. Best of luck☘️☘️☘️

Hi CleaClo!

CONGRATS!

A lot of people steer clear from pain meds.... I didn’t! I took full advantage of my options and haven’t had any negative repercussions (assuming there are no reasons to steer clear like dependency issues, obviously do the most loving thing for yourself...) Don’t be afraid to let the nurses take care of you.

Let us know how you are doing when you can.

Hi Marie, I suffer with anxiety also. I have worked around theatres for last 12yrs of my nursing career as well as having a good few anaesthetic’s myself but that anxiety is always there when getting prepped in theatre about to go under. My advice is it doesn’t matter how prepared you get that your anxiety will likely hit on day regardless. Let your anaesthetist know as they are experts at distracting you. You will find yourself chatting away not realising as much about the theatre set up process happening around you.

I have known anaesthetists and doctors undergoing surgery also and seen them get anxious in theatre also.

A bit of self pep talk in my head helps me. I tell myself thank god I’ll be asleep soon and it will all be over. That it won’t be hanging over my head anymore but finally over and done with.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
