I’m very scared! All I crave is sugar!!!

Recommended Posts

If you normally don't crave sugar I would see a doctor and find out if you have an infection somewhere. I crave sugar big time especially if I have a urinary tract infection. Its worth looking in to.

Surgery date was July 17/2017

Lost Almost 65-70 lbs. I have a couple questions! Why do I crave sugar so much to the point where I seem like a person that needs their drugs! I was NOT like this before having surgery! Also can some doctors not make your pouch very small? I feel I can eat wayyyyy more then other sleevers! Also how much Water should we drink an hour? Or does it matter? I try to drink as much as I can to meet at least 64 ounces a day! I hear some people say only 4 oz and hr but then I wouldn’t meet my goals bcuz I don’t wake up that early! Please people I’m so scared I feel from eating all the junk I’m stretching my pouch more and more! I talked to the nurse that is with my surgeon and she said I shouldn’t be craving this early! Like what! Did my surgeon do something wrong? I stop myself from eating sometimes bcuz I crave so much bad stuff!!! Could it be stress eating? I know this surgery is just a tool! But I thought I wouldn’t crave! He fixed a hernia at the same if this helps!! I’m ready to just give up on all this! I use to crave burgers and tacos before surgery and that’s why I got so big! But now! All I want is donuts and Twix I’m so lost people! I wish I never had this surgery before! I wish there was no such thing named food :(

Congratulations on 65-70 pounds down.

This is the mental battle with weight loss surgery. You will have salty sweet cravings. You will experience head and real hunger.

some things to try:

  • Get all the temptation foods out of the house.
  • Buy healthy options for salty and sweet cravings. Examples for salty: Jerky, Quest Protein chips and salsa - Examples for sweet: vanilla Protein Shake coffee and hershey's sugar free Syrup - Strawberries dipped in Sugar Free Chocolate syrup - Protein Bar.
  • Head hunger ;;Ugh! I feel your pain. I keep a tray of veggies in the fridge. If I'm hungry I eat all the veggies i want until full. I know its head hunger when I try to bargain with myself for another food choice.

I am going to a support group once a week. It has helped me a lot to keep things in perspective. Every one who is a year or more out tell me " Don't take that first bite of sugar" You need to just quit eating it. The cravings will stop.

I really wish I can go back to the groups! I just always have work then getting home cooking, cleaning! This surgery is a lot of work!!! I don’t know how people that work can still go to all there appointments!!! So you’re saying that first bite of sugar I took after surgery got it all going? Sounds so true! I just really wish I can fight this!!

I’m sure a lot of it is head hunger for me! When I’m really hungry I eat! But when I know it’s head hunger I try not to! But still do just to stop thinking of food! They told me before surgery! We are giving you a new stomach but not a new brain! And I always brushed that off like ahh I’ll be okay! But NO! I think i need a new brain too! lol! Thanks for your suggestions l!!

@Stacy160 How do I stop? I can’t stop! It’s in all day thing! I wasn’t like this before surgery and that’s what is really bothering me!! So you said you got off the sugar...?? How in the world did you do that! I google best donut places around my city and if the reviews are good I go and try them :( now I understand when I use to tell my mom to quit smoking and she said she can’t!!! How can I stop eating sugar? Cold turkey or slowly?

You said it's like your body is craving a drug...because IT IS. To your body, sugar is crack. Heroin. Meth. That's why I advised you to research it, so that you understand what's happening when you can't stop and why a little always makes you want more, more, and more. Bear in mind too, that excess carbs of any kind can trigger that, so I'd start by laying off candy, soda, and "treats" for a few days, but then also let go of breads, pastas, most fruits (on a regular basis anyway), etc. When you know and understand ahead of time what "just one bite," is going to do to you, not just mentally but physically, you'll have a much better chance of succeeding at this. :)

Good Lord! The difference for me in limiting carbs to low glycemic veggies and some low glycemic berries is night and day. I'm VERY carb sensitive. So if I start eating that sh*t, I will start craving crunchy, salty, snacky food--or Pasta, rice, potatoes, etc. I would eat them preferentially over anything else! :(

As the others have advised, clear all crap from your home or give your hub a locked cabinet to store his crap in with instructions not to eat it in front of you!!!

Then I'd honestly just use Atkins Diet to start stepping down and cold turkey your diet to a low carb one. Once you've been on Atkins and are feeling better, you "may" have some leeway to introduce low carb equivalents of the things you crave EVERY ONCE IN A BLUE MOON. If you do them every day? Your monkey will be back on your shoulders riding you. I've seen it too many times in almost 20 years as low carb.

Once you've adapted to a low carb life then you can tailor your diet to meet your specific needs. BTW, Atkins isn't high Protein and doesn't have to be high fat. You can use only enough fat to make stuff cook right. You can follow your doc's prescription for how much protein per day, serving sizes, veggies etc. Chiefly it's just a plan to limit carbs to 20g a day while giving you adequate protein for your individual needs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
