Has anyone ever started out doing Keto and then switching back to a more traditional bariatric plan?

Did your body adjust easily or did you gain weight?

Just to clarify- i don't mean going from keto to eating pizza and french fries all day. But i do mean transitioning from the keto diet to a lower fat, higher Protein, low good carb (such as fruits, veggies including starchy veggies and beans) lifestyle.

You will gain weight for a couple of weeks. Stored glucose has a Water component. If you've been on Keto for a while, you'll have depleted your body of normal glucose stores. When you refill those stores with a traditional diet....the glucose is stored with quite a bit of water.

Within a couple of weeks, you'll start losing again. But yes...you'll feel that bump. Try not to get discouraged....you're not gaining any fat.

I was doing a Keto like diet (was not hitting the fat goals) then I went on vacation and it was shot to hell

So I'm doing a low carb plan but nothing like before.
I didn't notice any gained weight as a result of the switch however I am in the early months of post surgery

my body seems to enjoy the fruits and vegetables more than the Proteins (I was a vegetarian prior to surgery anyways) but I'm still being careful to keep rice bread and the likes out of my diet.

Thank you for that. You clarified a lot of my concerns.

I totally get that, that's actually how i feel. Keto is fun because i basically eat crap and still lose weight, but i prefer the other low carb way of life, it's less restrictive. And somedays i just crave things like Protein packed fruit smoothies and keto doesn't allow for things like that, or spaghetti squash dishes.

Totally forgot to ask you this- when you stop, should you stop cold turkey and do low fat everything? Or should you slowly ease your way back into lower fat items? Or does it not even matter what order you do things?

The foods im most concerned with are fruits, Beans and squash.

Personally...I eat a lot of fruits, Beans and squash. I don't eat much fat. What fat I eat is usually olive oil, avocado or nuts. My meats are crazy lean.

I don't think it's going to be a huge deal to transition fast or slow...but you know your body best. If you run into discomfort or digestive issues, go more gradually.

I do whole grain bread in limited quantities, Protein Pasta, brown rice and potatoes. Lots of veggies. Fish, chicken, Mycoprotien, yogurt, kefir, etc.

To each, their own. You have to figure out what's right for you. Discussing it with your nutritionist is a good plan, too.

That's exactly how i eat too!!

I did Keto for a few months just as an experiment to see if it really works and it does, but i love fruit, and everything else you mentioned, and overall i just feel better when i eat the way i was before (even if the weight loss is slower)

Plus the idea of cutting out multiple healthy food groups forever seems like i might have deficiency issues later on with certain nutrients.

Take a look at the mayo Clinic Diet. It's based on the Mediterranean diet....which is the diet eaten by the people who have the best longevity in the world...lowest heart disease and cancer rates, too.

I have never felt better in my life or enjoyed my diet more....than when I started eating the Mayo Clinic Diet. (have been on it since June of last year)

My nutritionist is fully supportive of my continuing this diet. I have no problem hitting my 60+ g of Protein goal, and I keep my calories between 1000-1200 a day.

Some nutritionists will really push Keto after bariatric surgery....but my office serves a population of people from all over the world...many vegans, some following very different cultural eating habits...so they're more open to different paths up the mountain so to speak:)

Best wishes to you on your journey.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
