VSG on 4/16/18: My journey

Recommended Posts

Hi! I have been on BariatricPal for a while now but now that I am starting my two week liquid diet on Monday, I really want one thread where I can document my journey.

I am 37 years old with a weight of 232 and a height of 5’6. That puts me at a BMI of 37, and I was approved through Cigna (approval took 48 hours) due to severe osteoarthritis. I had a total knee replacement at 36 and my other knee is pretty bad too.

I have always been active and in the gym. I played high school and college soccer but was always heavier than the other females. I was an avid jogger but had to stop because of the knee issues. I’ve also been a yo-yo dieter all of my life. My highest weight was 269 and my lowest was 169. I’ve taken phentermine and had short term successes, but ultimately gained it back when I had my daughter. I also found that it caused high levels on anxiety and extreme fatigue, after taking it several times throughout the years. It just wasn’t worth the way it made me feel anymore.

Anyhow, I start my two week liquid diet on Monday. We are allowed one meal at night so that helps. I have my last appointment with the surgeon on Thursday, and he may let me off of the liquid diet if I have met the goal he gave me when we started the process. His goal was 12 pounds and I lost 9 the first two months, but these last three pounds seem to be fighting me at every step. I hope that three days of the liquid diet will help with the plateau.

I love to write and I think documenting my journey will help me a lot. Perhaps it might give a few other people some insight as well. Good luck everyone!!

Thanks! I am ashamed to admit that I am enjoying a lot of the foods that I shouldn’t have this weekend, lol. Oddly enough, I am looking forward to the challenge of the liquid diet next week. I guess that is the competitor inside of me, it’s a challenge to myself to see if I can do it.

Alright, I’ll update again after my appointment next week, or maybe sooner if I need to vent because the liquid diet is worse than I thought. 🤣🤣

I had my last appointment with the surgeon. My weight was still stuck at 232, so I have to stick with the modified liquid diet for another week. Funny enough, my weight loss has caught up and now I am past his weight loss goal. It’s all good though, I’m doing pretty good on the diet, although I haven’t been perfect. It does help being allowed one meal a day, for sure.

As for now, I’m just trucking along. I haven’t been taking any Vitamins because my labs were all perfect, but I will start after the surgery. I do take supplements for my hair, as I have fine hair already. I am super nervous about that so I am trying to be proactive.

Saturday, April 14

I am now two days from surgery. I have moments of “what am I doing”, and then snap out of it. I am more excited than anything, and ready to get this done.

I haven’t lost much more weight on the liquid diet and that really frustrates me. I followed the diet with the exception of three days, and those days my calories were still low. I am not sure why I haven’t lost more but that is life I guess.

My doctor has patients take Prilosec and an anti-nausea medicine for two days prior to surgery, so I’m about to head up and pick those up at the pharmacy. I was lucky that my insurance is only charging $15 for the anti-nausea meds because my surgeon said that most insurances don’t cover it. I will also be picking up some gas drops and liquid Tylenol.

Also, this is kind of embarrassing but I have had a hard time with Constipation since starting the two week diet. Perhaps it’s the Protein Shakes? ? I don’t know, but I bought Miralax yesterday to see if it helps.

Anyhow, I will be posting some before photos this weekend. Those are always fun. [emoji849]

I bought chewable Fiber "gummies". I can't stand drinking fiber mix drinks. They work. You may also want something to relieve gas post operation, they are going to pump you up with co2 like a balloon.

It might have already been suggested before, but get slippers or slipper shoes with support. You will be required to walk every 4 hours post operation (including hospital stay). Walking on hard floors in hospital socks is not comfortable. Also get plenty of sleep,. Waking you up and unbuckling you from bed, (o2 sensor and those ankle recirculation cuffs) and getting you back in every 4 hours really disturbs sleep. The walking is to help push the co2 out.

We were required to clean our entire body in shower night before and day of with "hibaclense" to help prevent infections. It's a precaution my hospital does for all surgical patients.

Also, if you don't have a recliner to sleep at night in, I suggest you evaluate how you can get into your bed with the least amount of moving or bending. Maybe you need to move a night stand or dresser. Your incision pain is manageable, but will hurt when you crunch your gut the slightest. Getting out of bed from 90 degree to sitting up was an experience. One hand on gut and other hand to get my unbalanced body up. I ended up using a recliner. Took a week until I could sleep normally bwith my natural toss and turning.

Oh goodness, I remember trying to get out of bed after my gallbladder was removed. It was not graceful, lol.

So I am on a two day clear diet to prepare for surgery. I bought Bone Broth and y’all, it was terrible. I have boxed chicken broth too, but I just can’t to it, not for 8 more days. So we went to Walmart and bought stuff to make homemade chicken noodle Soup. I also bought a little tiny strainer to strain the broth, and then our three year old will eat most of the noodles and chicken. It was a win-win, and knocked out meals for a few days for her.

I also found little half cup plastic containers so when the soup is cooled, I plan on straining the broth and filling those up. I am having surgery Monday and probably won’t want soup until Wednesday (if even then), so I am going to store them in the freezer for now. IMG_0565.JPG

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
