How much could you eat after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I’m 1.5 weeks out and I just moved to soft foods today. I’ve read so many stories about people not being able to consume more than a couple of tablespoons of food in one sitting. That has not been my experience today at all. I was easily able to eat 1/2 cup of cottage cheese and one cheese stick? Is this normal? I’m of course worried my sleeve is too large.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Did you RD/NUT give you instructions about how much to eat?

It depends on the food. The denser it is the harder it is, plus everyone is different. For example for me tuna was a pain, but cheese wasn't.

No, they did not. The point is that I thought one point of this surgery was to physically restrict consumption. Otherwise I would just continue to diet...

Ah yes. That makes sense.

Think of it this way you are training your new stomach with every stage. As you advance to the next stage you will always be able to eat more volume of things from the last stage than you can from the current one. For me (about 1.5 weeks ahead of you) this means, 8-12oz of liquids, 4-6oz of puree (in which I include the aforementioned cottage cheese), and 2-4 oz of solid foods. I would add that for me in addition to the density things that are drier I also have a more limited capacity for.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
