Post Op esophageal cancer worries

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

So I had my first email consultation with a surgeon regarding gastric sleeve surgery, filled out a few forms regarding my health, previous weight loss attempts etc . My sister is a doctor and she's really against me having the surgery because a) she's says I'm too young (27) and be she's concerned about the risk of developing esophageal cancer later on. Have any of you read up on this or had similar concerns? It's making me reconsider my options.

Real proven risk of complications of obesity with tons and tons of data

VS borderline non existent data on bariatric surgery and esophageal cancer.

Not to suggest that bariatric surgery doesn't have flaws, but from a statistical data standpoint the benefits drastically drastically outweigh the existing (and in this case not even proven) cons

Is your sister a gastrointestinal or ENT physician?

My surgeon okayed me for either surgery but was leaning towards sleeve. I am 27 as well and one month post op rny. I did this because I was having heartburn, and even though it wasn’t terrible, I didn’t want it to get worse after surgery and be subject to another surgery to rny. Being so young I just thought I would have a lot of time for it to get worse. It’s a personal decision, just do your research.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies- no my sister isn't a specialist in those areas, I think she is just concerned about the longer term issues that could arise from the surgery. My mum had a sleeve done almost 10 years ago and she says it was the best decision she ever made and is able to enjoy her retirement properly. I know my sister is concerned about me but she's never had an issue with her weight so it's hard for her to understand what it's like feeling this way and feeling like you're stuck in this vicious circle of losing weight and then gaining it again.

Thanks for your input guys :)

Doctors are specialists in their own field. I would not consult my sleep doctor on my psych meds not his area. Also doctors are not trained in nutrition they just aren't so you have an entire field of practitioners who agree that being overweight or obese is an issue but legitimately don't have the training to steer you in the correct direction. So honestly go with your doctor. I know what it's like to have doctors in the family my mil is a psychiatrist my fil is a retired general surgeon and three other of my sibling in law are either nurses nurse practitioners or therapists. Plus half my girl friends are nurses lol. So I get it I do.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
