Interesting Article about WLS and Relationships

http://www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-bariatric-surgery-relationship-status-20180327-story.html

"A large Swedish study has found that obese people who had a spouse or live-in partner and then underwent weight loss surgery were 28% more likely to become separated or divorced compared with those in a comparison group who didn't have surgery."

"The authors of the new study acknowledged that while weight loss surgery "may affect the dynamics of the relationship," assigning blame for breakups would be a more difficult task. Their research did not capture which partner ended the relationship, or why."

"Divorces and separations were higher among patients who judged the quality of their family relationships to be poorer at the time of surgery. And they were more common among patients who were younger, had been divorced before, or who had been married or living with a partner for shorter period."

"But not all ended relationships should be seen as evidence of an "adverse event" of bariatric surgery, the authors cautioned. The increased self-confidence and self-esteem that comes with taking the decision to have surgery, and with the substantial weight loss that results, may have empowered some patients "to leave an unhealthy relationship," they wrote.?

"Patients who were single before surgery, however, were roughly twice as likely to begin a new relationship afterward as were obese patients who just got weight-loss advice"

"After four years, 21% of the single men and women who got surgery had entered into marriage or a new romantic relationship. For the obese members of the comparison group who got diet-and-exercise advice only, 11% had done so after four years. At 10 years out, 35% in the surgery group had married or kindled a new romance, compared to 19% of those in the comparison group"

Hmmmm interesting. I was single and I have entered into a committed relationship and it has been absolutely wonderful and this man only just joined my journey after I was 7 months out from surgery and he has been an absolute wonderful supportive man through my journey we've been together for 8 months and it has been awesome.. He's offered to support me in any way possible and has followed through .....the most support I've ever had in my life... I value him so much for being here for me and it's just truly made my experience all that much better. Hell I had best friends that didn't want to be supportive of this surgery and I'm no longer friends with ....so for a man to just walk in my life and be so supportive and committed in my journey.. so I believe this also changes us for the better in more ways than one...... in every way in your life

Someone here posts the phrase "WLS makes good relationships better and bad relationships worse" (I may be paraphrasing).

That said I'm sure that there are lots of different reasons for these outcomes and a bunch of them are ideal outcomes. For example weight loss giving someone confidence to leave a bad relationship.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
