3 days post op and in pain just sipping water

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on 3/26/2018 and to this day I still can't drink much Water. Yesterday I could only drink around 5 ounces with a lot of pain, is it normal?

Also weird fact when I weighed myself after returning from the hospital I had gained 4 pounds??

5oz an hour? If so that's pretty normal for day 3. You were on IV fluids in the hospital, my guess is that you were dehydrated going into surgery.

No it's @ 5 onces for the whole day, I'm afraid to get dehydrated

I weighed more in hospital too bc they pump you with all the fluids, then when I weighed in at my 7 day post up I had lost
8 pounds, my doctor said that was normal bc it was the fluids balancing out.

Well that is concerning. Are you talking about 5oz of Water while getting considerable amounts of Fluid from other sources? If not you need to call your doctor, because you are going to need to get help with this really fast before you get completely dehydrated. Generally speaking they don't let you out of the hospital until you can drink 4oz an hour, does this mean this enhanced difficulty developed after you were released?

Also on a separate note you mentioned pain. Are you taking something for the pain (Tylenol II?) and if so is it not effective? Pain mixed with dehydration are going to absolutely kill your recovery and rob you of the energy you need to heal effectively.

I am on day 8 post up... I had some hard days too. Breathing exercises and prayer helped me. I had 3 days of low grade fever. Each day, look for one small positive thing! Hope you feel better soon... you will!

This ^^^^^ add to that try room temp. Even frozen popsicles until you find what you can tolerate. Even at 20 ounces you will be in trouble fast.

I had surgery same day as you. I find Bone Broth or any broth to be soothing.

Hang in there and try everything until you find what works

I am glad your doing better with you in take of fluids and pain. I heard day 3 can be rough and actually 3 to 6 can be hard. Hopefully you turned the corner.

I had surgery same day. Hope you are getting your liquid intake up! I think that has been the key to my recovery at least...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
