Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

Recommended Posts

I am in BC Canada and there is no self pay option here for gastric sleeve. I had a gastric band, but it was removed in September 2017 due to a port infection. My doctor sent a referral to the bariatric program here, but it can be a two year wait for a consultation even... so I am exploring my options.

Where can I go??? The thought of surgery in Mexico is terrifying, but so many people do it.

Are there any other Canadians out there who had surgery elsewhere? Where did you go? How much did it cost? Are you happy?

TY in advance

I'm not Canadian, but had surgery in Mexico several years ago. There were no problems and I was perfectly safe the entire time I was there. The Drs that partner with Bariatric Pal are all very reputable and do a great job. You can expect to pay around 4K plus your flight.

I am very happy with my results. I say go for it.

Echelon staples have had recalls because they've fallen apart.. Like in 2014. Why not upgrade to tri-staples? Is there a reason for using echelon? There's a video on YouTube about echelon vs tri-staples and the echelon (green) burst, where the tri-staples held firm. Not trolling. I'm researching surgeons for my own vsg. It's a concern that I have.

Honestly none of my business, but I vote for Dr Illan, that's where I would go,if I couldn't get it in my,own country. He's even Alex Brecher our founder's doctor, he could have afforded to go anywhere and he trusts Dr Illan, that's recommendation enough for me! 🌸😝🌺

Hey I’m from bc Canada and I got surgery almost 7 years ago in Cancun. My mom and best friend both went to Tijuana and also had great success. Do your research reach out to people who have had recent success stories everyone is different and has different stories. If you relatively a healthy person besides being overweight I think the risk is low but again it’s always a risk.

Where did you go in Mexico? What group?

I went to Dr Almanza in Tijuana. He is no longer a partner on this site. There are bad reviews about him in various places but my experience with him was great. No problems, no post op issues, and the staff treated me very well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
