I am 4 months post op (in 2 days) and my hair has recently started coming out in huge handfuls.. I am exceeding my Protein goals every single day and take my multi Vitamin and Biotin everyday.. does anyone have any advice or something that has worked for you or helped with this? I am so depressed about it.. my hair has always been really long and thick and now it’s so thin and I’m terrified I’m going to lose it all. :( any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check out a professional Shampoo system called “Nioxin”...It works. If you cant find it in salons or beauty supplies, you can order on Amazon. Have you had blood labs done? Just to make sure thyroid & everything is ok?

I will look at it.. I just had blood work done 2 weeks ago and the only thing that was not normal was my Vitamin D. He said everything else was perfect..

I just ordered some Nioxin today and picked up some Biotin. I'm only on day 2/14 of my pre op liquid diet but i wanted to get a start on some of these things and hopefully it'll help lessen the effects.

I started taking Biotin around 3 months prior to having surgery.. I’m looking into Nioxin but unsure of which system to use since I have color and chemically treated hair.. :-/

I got level 4. I was unsure also and that one seem to best fit my needs. I have PCOS and already have thinning hair. So figured I'd go with that.

With the Biotin are you using the soft gels or the pill form? I bought the soft gels but then realized i probably should've gotten the pills so that i could crush them for when i start back on my Vitamins after surgery.

I actually got the BariMelts Biotin since the pill form makes me puke. The biotin in pill form were the only things other than crystal light that has made me puke. The barimelts just melt on your tongue.

My clinic recommends collagen too. I take a scoop full and mix it with juice. I am scheduled for 4/16 and trying to be as proactive as possible. I also started using the Shampoo with Biotin and collagen, but might change brands because I don’t like the way my hair feels .

Out of curiosity, what was your surgeon's pre-op diet like? And how quickly did you move to puree after?

my pre-op diet was Clear Liquids for 2 weeks with the exception of Protein Shakes. I had to stop drinking the Protein shakes 48 hours prior to having my surgery.. I was on clear liquids for 3 days after surgery then was allowed to incorporate my protein shakes back into my diet. I was on liquid diet after surgery for 2 weeks then moved to puréed. At my one month post-op appointment he moved me to soft foods for 2 weeks then back to normal and wanted me to try different things. I couldn’t tolerate chicken at all until a week ago. But crystal light and Biotin pills, even taken directly after I eat, I could not tolerate.

That happened to my mom and she’s over 10 years out. She gets steroid injections in her scalp to help and does nixion. It’s a Hair growth Shampoo and conditioner. I use the shampoo and conditioner as well but talk to your surgeon for some ideas as well

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
