Any great books/blog/podcast on food addiction/emotional eating?

Recommended Posts

I just started see a therapist, but I was also wondering if anyone on this board has found a great book (or podcast, blogs or vlogs, etc.) on dealing with food addiction or emotion eating that you would recommend?

I am determined that truly resolving the underlying issues that got me to this point. and this is one of the most important parts of my future success. In the last ten years, I've learned what I should be eating and what I should be doing in terms of exercise. I have had long periods where I do well with one or the other or both. However, I always seem to backslide, and I'm back to where I started.

From what I can see from this board and other resources, eventually with the sleeve, you can stretch your stomach out again if you fall back into old patterns. I don't want to have this radical body change and spend $20K of my own money (pre-op, therapist, surgery, etc.) and be in the same place a few years from now.

Looking forward to some suggestions...

I haven't seen any books or podcasts (not sure what "vlogs" are), but I think this fear of backsliding is to one extent or the other on the minds of most folks here. I don't know if there's a secret other than having a support system to help on your journey (this board is a decent place to find some emotional support if you don't have other sources).

Thank you. I definitely plan to use the board as support (as I'm using it now for concerns pre-surgery :) ).

However, I was also looking to see if anyone had found a book, etc. that they have found useful in approaching issue regarding emotional eating or food addiction specifically. There are a lot out there, but I wanted to see if someone who has gone thorough/is going through this process has found one particularly helpful.

[FYI - vlogs are video blogs like you tube postings]

This is on my reading list, but I haven't got to it yet:-

"The Emotional First + Aid Kit, A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery, Second Edition, by Cynthia L. Alexander, PsyD"

I picked up up the recommendation from the weight loss surgery podast by Reeger Cortell FNP, which in my view is the best podcast out there on bariatric surgery.

I listen to a podcast that is done be JoLynn Braley of the Inner Self Diet. It's called "The JoLynn Braley Show". She deals with all of the reasons why we eat and how we can change them. It's all about changing from the inside out. She does some personal counseling but she can be kind of expensive. But the podcast is really good.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
